The Senior Sister / Senior Charge Nurse are expected to support and provide both strong leadership and clinical expertise to staff within the Adult Emergency Department and Urgent Care Centre. This role carries the continuing responsibility for the management of the department, as delegated by the Matrons, together with the provision of a 24 hour expert emergency nurse service. We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate a kind and compassionate attitude, with the skills and experience to lead effective and efficient urgent and emergency care practice. Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust now includes West Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust, forming a major multi-site healthcare provider and teaching hospital across two main sites. The Senior Sister / Charge nurse within the Emergency Department will support and lead staff to ensure high quality care is delivered to those attending the department. The role carries the continuing responsibility for the management of the department, as delegated by the Matrons, together with the provision of a twenty four hour expert emergency nurse service. The role includes working closely and effectively with the multi-disciplinary team in the management of the Emergency Department. This includes the support and leadership provided to nursing and support staff within the Emergency Department and Urgent Care Centre. The role also includes the continuing responsibility for the effective delivery of the philosophy, policies, standards of care and morale of the department in line with the Trust values.Responsibilities
Working autonomously whilst working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, assessing and managing a caseload of patients within the Emergency Department. Maintain effective communication with patients, carers and professionals to ensure seamless service delivery.Act as a role model of expert clinical practice.Ensure that nursing documentation is maintained to a high standard. Be a competent user of and participate in the ongoing development of the Electronic Patient Record.Work in close liaison with other members of the multi-disciplinary team.Participate in quality and audit initiatives within the department.Use clinical expertise and skills to accurately assess patients’ individual needs and manage clinical priorities appropriately.Coordinate and supervise the management and planning of nursing care within the department when undertaking clinical shifts.Maintain a safe and acceptable environment for patients, visitors, students and staff, reporting and taking appropriate action on hazards, incidents, faulty equipment or inadequate standards of cleaning. Coordinate reporting of all such incidents in liaison with the Matron and Divisional Risk Manager.Ensure all patients who use the Emergency Department service do so in a timely manner, ensuring equality, privacy and dignity needs are met.Challenge practice so that the best and most appropriate treatment is given to the patient.Managerial
Work closely with the Matron and Lead Clinician so that the vision and goals of the Emergency Department are translated into practice.Identify areas for improving nursing practice and service delivery in partnership with the Matron.Ensure safe custody, maintenance and administration of drugs in accordance with Law and established Trust procedure.Work with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure key performance Quality Clinical Indicators for the Emergency Department are achieved.Support the Matron in monitoring and managing stock and equipment; collaborate on performance targets for the department.Manage aspects of clinical governance including escalation, report writing, presenting to Panels and implementing recommendations at local level with Matron support.Manage a group of staff as allocated by the Matron/Managers, ensuring objectives align with the department business plan and nursing and midwifery strategy in personal development plans.Attend department/Trust-wide meetings as directed by the Matron; support development of department policies and procedures and ensure dissemination to all staff.Know responsibilities within policies pertaining to Major Incident, CBRNE and other emergency bleep responses. Ensure staff know their duties and carry the Departmental major incident bleep when required.Actively participate in selecting, recruiting and inducting new nursing and HCA staff.Involve in initiating and implementing change as directed by the Matron, Lead Clinician or Divisional Nurse.Education
Establish and maintain links with the Practice Development Nurse of the Emergency Department.Act as a clinical supervisor and work with others to develop their ability to undertake their role.Participate in supervision and support of students in pre-registration practice placements and assessment of learning outcomes.Ensure equitable opportunities are available to all nursing staff in the department for learning.Facilitate staff appraisals and support PDP objectives in line with the Trust appraisal system and values.Participate in teaching and assessing in clinical practice.Professional responsibilities
Act within the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Conduct.Undertake further educational qualifications and training to increase professional knowledge and remain updated.Be aware of local and national policies in relation to Emergency care.Operate within hospital policies and procedures regarding complaints, fire and major incidents, etc.Critically reflect on own performance through clinical supervision and participate in own Appraisal, developing and actioning a Personal Development Plan (PDP).Attend appropriate educational programmes to develop self and team in accordance with service needs.This advert closes on Sunday 14 Sep ..... full job details .....
