Overview

12 months fixed term locum consultant post in the Paediatric Intensive Care unit at Evelina London Children’s Hospital and at the Royal Brompton PICU — two sites. Applications are welcome from paediatric or anaesthetic backgrounds. Proposed start date: September 2025.Main duties

The Evelina PICU comprises 19 to 33 beds over two floors depending on activity and patient load. The post-holder will be part of a team of paediatric intensivists providing care for the paediatric critical care unit and integrated retrieval service (STRS) at Evelina. There are 11 consultants in the RBH-based paediatric critical care team. The successful applicant will provide a specialist service to children requiring intensive and high-dependency care at one or both paediatric critical care sites in the Trust. They will also provide consultant-led triage and management of emergency inter-hospital referrals and transfers with South Thames Retrieval Service. For applicants from an anaesthetic background, a fixed day in anaesthesia with anaesthetic on call can be negotiated. The post-holder will be on the paediatric intensive care consultant on-call rota, with 1:6 on call for management of the intensive care and supervision of the South Thames Retrieval Service. Additional on-call commitments may be necessary and attract additional PAs. Both services are managed from within the same consultant team.Working for our organisation

The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Guys and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust is the regional lead PICU, serving the health needs of children in the South East of England, including London. It forms part of a large tertiary children’s hospital and regional children’s operational delivery network, with tertiary services in neonatology, cardiology/cardiac surgery, neurology, nephrology, metabolic medicine, general paediatrics, paediatric surgery and clinical genetics. Following merger with the Royal Brompton Hospital (RBH), consultants in the critical care unit are expected to work across sites in either intensive care unit; the RBH site case mix is largely cardiorespiratory.Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful applicant will be expected to provide significant cover for the South Thames Retrieval Service, including educational support for the service and the region. The South Thames Retrieval Service is integrated and staffed from the PICU. Day-to-day management of the service is a key responsibility of the on-call consultant team, with support from other PICU colleagues. An active PICU and retrieval teaching programme for PICU retrieval nurses, nurse practitioners, doctors and the region’s nurses and doctors is ongoing and delivered by the consultant team, including education for a national advanced paediatric critical care clinical practice programme.The post may be based in either paediatric intensive care unit.Person specification

Professional Qualifications

Essential criteriaMBBS or equivalent; MRCPCH or equivalent qualificationsFull GMC Registration on Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining CCT by date of interview, or eligibility to apply for specialist registration pending CESRDesirable criteriaInstructor in APLS or PALS; formal qualification or accreditation in a related specialtyHigher degree relevant to the specialty (e.g. PhD/MD/ MSc)Clinical Experience

Essential criteriaCompletion of all competencies in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine (minimum 2.5 years including 6 months anaesthesia) in a unit approved for training by the RCPCH GRID PICM Training programme with evidence of training sign-off including six months anaesthetic training OR an existing practising Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine (substantive)Valid APLS and NLS; valid level 3 safeguarding trainingDesirable criteriaPaediatric ECMO experienceClinical Skills
