Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist - Paediatric Ophthalmology

Overview
This is a newly configured Locum Consultant post. The remit of the post holder is to work within the multi-disciplinary team providing and developing ophthalmic care for paediatric patients and to treat motility-related presentations in both adult and paediatric patients. The role includes teaching and training junior staff (medical and non-medical) and a commitment to the general workload of the Care Group. The post is primarily based at King’s College Hospital, Denmark Hill, with potential to support other King’s sites as appropriate, and may involve clinics at University Hospital Lewisham and ROP screening across King’s sites. The post may also cover leave and the proposed Job Plan is subject to review within 3 months of commencement.As a tertiary centre, the service receives referrals from throughout the region, particularly for the management of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). The post holder is expected to contribute to developing community-based paediatric ophthalmology services, participate in training, supervision and virtual case review, and may involve high-volume cataract surgery. The on-call commitment is a 1:15 rota (low frequency Category B) with routine job-planned work on weekends as part of the total job planned PAs. The post is part of a Consultant-led 7-day service expectation.All staff have a responsibility for safeguarding children and vulnerable adults and for ensuring awareness of the specific duties relating to their role. The Trust has policies on infection prevention and control, clinical governance and patient safety, and staff are expected to comply with these principles.Responsibilities
Together with other colleagues, provide a high quality care service to patients, including all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.Share responsibility for providing 24/7 cover for the Unit on a rota basis and cover colleagues’ periods of annual leave and short-term sickness as detailed in the contract.Provide clinical supervision of junior medical/dental practitioners in collaboration with other consultant colleagues.Carry out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contribute to continuing professional development and clinical governance initiatives.Manage outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group management team.Contribute to the Care Group’s research interests in accordance with the Trust’s RandD framework.Contribute to audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, Clinical Governance and Learning from Deaths initiatives.Participate in formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Group’s Business Plan, and engage with internal and external agencies on service plans and developments.Ensure all activities are conducted within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).Provide professional leadership for all staff in the specialty and foster post-qualification professional education and training.Work with clinical and other professional colleagues to maintain productivity and staff job satisfaction, including involvement in the appraisal process for peers and junior colleagues.Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Care Group/Departmental Manager/Clinical Director.Be aware of and comply with Trust infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene and environmental hygiene.Prepare for and undertake protective interventions consistent with evidence-based practice and patient safety.Contribute to providing Consultant-led 7-day services and participate in future developments alongside other Consultant ..... full job details .....
