Assistant Estimator – Main Contractor
Our client is a rapidly growing main contractor with an established presence across the UK and an expanding Midlands operation.
The business delivers projects across a range of sectors including industrial and logistics, commercial, life sciences, data centres, leisure, retail, fit-out and refurbishment, with schemes ranging from smaller developments through to major projects.
Due to continued growth within the pre-construction team, they are looking to appoint an Assistant Estimator to support the Estimating and Pre-Construction functions.
This is an excellent opportunity for an Assistant Estimator or Junior Estimator looking to develop their career within a progressive main contractor and gain exposure to a broad range of projects.
The Role
Working closely with the Estimating and Pre-Construction teams, you will assist with the preparation of competitive and commercially sound tenders.
Your responsibilities will include:

• Assisting with the preparation of tenders and estimates
• Reviewing drawings, specifications and tender documentation
• Preparing quantities and take-offs
• Obtaining and analysing subcontractor and supplier quotations
• Issuing enquiries to subcontractors and suppliers
• Comparing quotations and preparing tender comparisons
• Assisting with pricing preliminaries
• Supporting the preparation of bills of quantities
• Assisting with value engineering exercises
• Reviewing construction programmes and project information
• Maintaining accurate estimating records
• Updating tender information and pricing databases
• Supporting the Estimator with tender submissions
• Attending tender meetings when required
• Liaising with the commercial and pre-construction teams
• Assisting with post-tender queries
• Developing relationships with subcontractors and suppliers
• Supporting the wider pre-construction team with ad-hoc requirements

About You
The ideal candidate will have some previous estimating or commercial experience within the construction industry and will be looking for the next step in their career.
You will ideally have:

• Previous experience within estimating, quantity surveying or a similar construction role
• Experience working for a main contractor, subcontractor or specialist contractor
• Understanding of construction drawings and specifications
• Experience carrying out quantity take-offs
• Experience obtaining subcontractor quotations
• Good understanding of construction costs
• Strong numerical and analytical skills
• Excellent attention to detail
• Good IT skills, particularly Microsoft Excel
• Ability to manage multiple tenders and deadlines
• Strong communication skills
• A proactive and commercially minded approach
• Construction-related qualification would be advantageous
• Experience with estimating software would be beneficial

This role could suit an Assistant Estimator, Junior Estimator, Trainee Estimator, Assistant QS or Quantity Surveyor looking to move into estimating.
