RF Design Engineer
Are you an experienced RF Design Engineer with strong DAS expertise looking to work on one of the UK's largest rail telecommunications programmes?
We're recruiting for a Design Engineer to join a major infrastructure programme delivering 4G and 5G Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) across the UK's mainline railway network. This is a fantastic opportunity to become the technical lead for RF design on a nationally significant project, working alongside Network Rail, Mobile Network Operators and specialist delivery partners.
This is a highly autonomous role where you'll have real influence over technical solutions, engineering standards and programme delivery.
The Role
You'll be responsible for the end-to-end RF design process, from initial surveys through to integration and final validation, ensuring designs are technically robust, practical to deliver and commercially effective.
Working closely with internal teams, suppliers and key stakeholders, you'll provide technical leadership whilst driving innovation and continuous improvement across the programme.
Key Responsibilities
-
Lead RF and DAS design activities across multiple rail projects nationwide.
-
Produce high-quality design documentation, technical submissions and post-integration reports.
-
Develop practical, buildable RF solutions for complex station and tunnel environments.
-
Review, challenge and approve supplier design submissions through to handover.
-
Specify and coordinate RF surveys, analysing results to optimise network performance.
-
Act as the technical authority for RF design, identifying risks and resolving complex engineering challenges.
-
Support testing, commissioning and network integration activities.
-
Work directly with Network Rail, Mobile Network Operators and supply chain partners.
-
Drive value engineering and continuous improvement across designs and delivery methods.
-
Ensure all solutions comply with relevant rail, telecoms and safety standards.
About You
You'll be an experienced RF Design Engineer who enjoys solving complex engineering challenges and is comfortable taking ownership of technical decisions.
You'll ideally have:
-
Proven RF design experience within DAS, in-building or macro mobile networks.
-
Strong knowledge of RF principles including interference, PIM, VSWR, path loss and coverage modelling.
-
iBwave Level 2 Certification.
-
Experience producing RF designs from concept through to implementation.
-
The ability to work independently whilst managing multiple stakeholders.
-
Excellent communication skills and a practical, solution-focused approach.
Desirable Experience
-
Rail telecommunications or other highly regulated infrastructure sectors.
-
Network Rail standards and approval processes.
-
Ranplan software.
-
Mobile Network Operator integration experience.
-
IET membership or working towards professional registration.
Qualifications
-
Degree in Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
-
iBwave Level 2 Certification.
-
Around 3-5 years' experience in RF/DAS design.
What's on Offer?
-
Opportunity to work on one of the UK's flagship rail connectivity programmes.
-
High-profile technical leadership role with genuine autonomy.
-
Hybrid working with nationwide project exposure.
-
Long-term career development within a growing infrastructure business.
-
Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
