About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Quantity Surveyor to join a growing civil engineering and groundworks contractor delivering projects across Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, and the surrounding areas. This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially focused professional with a strong background in civils and groundworks to take ownership of multiple projects from tender through to final account.
The successful candidate will play a key role in managing project costs, maximising profitability, and ensuring commercial success while working closely with operational teams, clients, subcontractors, and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the commercial aspects of civil engineering and groundworks projects.
- Prepare, review, and negotiate subcontract agreements.
- Produce accurate cost reports, forecasts, and CVRs.
- Measure and value works completed on site.
- Prepare and submit applications for payment.
- Assess and manage subcontractor payments and variations.
- Identify, value, and agree compensation events and claims.
- Monitor project costs and identify opportunities to improve profitability.
- Support procurement activities and supplier negotiations.
- Prepare and agree final accounts with clients and subcontractors.
- Maintain strong relationships with project teams and clients.
- Ensure compliance with contractual requirements and company procedures.
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years' experience as a Quantity Surveyor within civil engineering and groundworks.
- Strong understanding of NEC and other standard forms of contract.
- Experience working on projects involving:
- Groundworks
- Earthworks
- Drainage
- Foundations
- Roads and Highways
- Infrastructure Works
- Utilities
- External Works
- Strong commercial and contractual awareness.
- Experience producing CVRs, valuations, variations, and final accounts.
- Excellent negotiation and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and commercial management systems.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
Desirable
- Degree or HNC/HND in Quantity Surveying or a related construction discipline.
- Experience working for a specialist groundworks or civil engineering contractor.
- Working knowledge of NEC contracts.
- Membership of RICS or studying towards professional qualification.
