Principal Flood Risk Consultant

Location: Exeter

Salary: -55,000 - -70,000 + Benefits

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Principal Flood Risk Consultant to join a growing environmental consultancy in Exeter. This role is ideal for an experienced flood risk professional looking to take a leading role in delivering technically complex projects, managing client relationships and mentoring junior members of the team.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary environmental and engineering team, you will lead the delivery of flood risk and drainage projects across the residential, commercial, renewable energy and infrastructure sectors. You will play a key role in project management, technical review, business development and the continued growth of the flood risk team.



The Role

  • Leading the delivery of Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs) for a wide range of development projects.
  • Producing and reviewing drainage strategies in accordance with national and local planning policy.
  • Designing sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) from concept through to detailed design.
  • Undertaking hydraulic and hydrological assessments using industry-standard software.
  • Managing multiple projects, ensuring programmes, budgets and technical standards are achieved.
  • Providing technical leadership and quality assurance across flood risk and drainage projects.
  • Mentoring and supporting junior consultants and graduates.
  • Liaising with clients, planning authorities, the Environment Agency, Lead Local Flood Authorities and other stakeholders.
  • Preparing fee proposals and contributing to business development activities.
  • Supporting planning applications through the provision of high-quality technical reports and advice.
  • Working collaboratively with environmental, ecology, planning and engineering teams on multidisciplinary projects.


Requirements

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Geography, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
  • Extensive consultancy experience within flood risk and drainage.
  • Strong knowledge of UK flood risk policy, planning guidance and SuDS design principles.
  • Experience delivering Flood Risk Assessments and drainage strategies for planning applications.
  • Proven project management and client-facing experience.
  • Excellent report writing and communication skills.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Full right to work in the UK.


Desirable

  • Chartered or working towards Chartership with ICE, CIWEM or a relevant professional institution.
  • Experience using MicroDrainage, Causeway Flow, InfoDrainage, Flood Modeller, HEC-RAS, FEH Web and QGIS or ArcGIS.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary projects.
  • Commercial awareness and experience supporting business development.
  • Line management or mentoring experience.
