Locum Consultant in Acute Medicine

This is a 2 x 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant in Acute Medicine. This post will be available for a period of 6 Months and is available immediately.Our SDEC unit is co-located at SJUH with our Emergency Department (ED), maximising review by the right person in the right place first time, improving patient and staff satisfaction and enabling admission avoidance. This is an exciting time to join our expanding team as we embed innovative ways of working to shape the future model of acute medicine in Leeds. We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated and committed individuals to join our team of Acute Medicine consultants and work within the Urgent Care CSU to drive forward our Acute Medicine and SDEC services.We have two Acute Medical Units with a total of 57 beds and a co-located 3 bedded Enhanced Care Area, called HOBS (High Observation Area). We have a strong commitment to the delivery of same day emergency care which operates a 7 day service and sees approximately 200 patients per week, as well as delivering an excellent and established ambulatory VTE service.Applicants should possess a wide experience in Acute and General Medicine and have excellent team-working skills.Main duties of the jobSuccessful applicants will work in all 3 areas of acute medicine (AMU, Enhanced Care and Same Day Emergency Care) and will contribute to the out of hours rota (currently 1 in 8).About usThe department is hard working, friendly and co-operative, with consultant colleagues sharing educational and service development work. If you do experience a delay in the shortlisting stage of the recruitment cycle, please bear with us while this process is completed, and contact the named contact if you have any questions.Job descriptionJob responsibilitiesThis is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Acute Medicine with a special interest in Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and will deliver 8.5 PAs of direct clinical care and 1.5 PAs supporting professional activity.The post will be based at St James Hospital. The acute medical floor consists of 3 areas: Acute Medical Wards (J27 and J28), which also accommodate a short stay function, and an Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC) (incorporating daily Hot Clinics and same day assessments). Collectively the acute medical floor areas admit approximately 40 to 80 patients per day. In addition, there are direct admissions to acute cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, stroke and respiratory medicine which by-pass the acute medical floor.There are currently 7 consultants in acute medicine. The acute medicine directorate is currently planning to increase the strength and size of its acute consultant work force, to support the delivery of a new same day emergency care unit.In total, there are 10 higher specialty trainees in acute medicine in Leeds. Five are based on the acute medical floor, and the others are based full time in relevant specialties but participate in the on-call rota. Junior doctors work 4-6 month blocks in acute medicine, with additional doctors working on the acute floor when on-call. The department is well-staffed with FY1 doctors, FY2 doctors and core trainees in medicine and ACCS.The department currently has two undergraduate firms during the academic year. Third year and fourth year medical students from the University of Leeds work on the acute medical floor and participate in regular teaching sessions.Person SpecificationExperienceEssentialShould have completed a recognised training programme or CESR in Acute MedicineMust be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all areas of acute medicine including acute hospital services and ambulatory services.Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.Understanding of current issues in the NHS.Well organised and skilled in good time management.Effective interpersonal skills.Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.DesirablePrevious experience of supervising research by junior staff.Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.Attendance at recognised management course.Other RequirementsEssentialApplicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.QualificationsEssentialMB BS or equivalent qualification.MRCP or equivalent qualification.AIM SCEEligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.Eligibility to work in the UK.Is up to date and fit to practise safelyAll applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following:passing a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved providerhaving a GCSE, A level, Scottish National Qualification level 4 or 5, Scottish Higher or Advanced Higher in English, gained through study at a UK school that you began when you were under 18having a degree-level academic qualification that was taught in English - if you studied abroad, youll need to apply through Ecctis (formerly UK NARIC) for confirmation that your qualification is equivalent to a UK bachelors degree, masters degree or PhDYou do not need to prove your knowledge of English if youve already passed an English Language assessment that is accepted by the relevant regulated professional body.DesirableHigher degree e.g. MD/PhD relevant to the subspecialty.Any attachments will be accessible after you click to ..... full job details .....
