In-Custody Careers Adviser
We're hiring for a Careers Information, Advice and Guidance Adviser. The role will require you to manage a caseload of participants in custody, providing careers information, advice and guidance to support their resettlement journey. You'll help individuals overcome barriers, develop new skills, achieve agreed milestones and progress towards sustainable employment.
Delivering tailored support forms a key part of the role, including assessments, one-to-one guidance, training, education opportunities, pre-release planning and employment support. Through personalised action plans and ongoing encouragement, participants will be supported to build confidence, raise aspirations and prepare for life beyond custody. Accurate record keeping is a key part of the role. You'll maintain case notes, update risk information and record achievements on our systems, ensuring compliance requirements are met and participant progress is fully documented.
Our ideal candidate will be passionate about helping people overcome barriers and achieve positive change. You'll have excellent communication skills, the ability to build strong relationships and experience of supporting individuals. Most importantly, you will be resilient, motivated and committed to helping participants develop the skills, confidence and aspirations needed to move towards sustainable employment and successful resettlement.
In return for your dedication, knowledge, and commitment, we’re offering a competitive salary range of £26,000 - £29,545 per annum (for those qualified at L4) with these great additional benefits:

Location: HMP Channings Wood located on Greenhill Lane, near Newton Abbot, Devon (TQ12 6DW) and benefits from road access via the A38 and surrounding local routes. The prison is accessible by public transport, with local bus services operating near the site and Newton Abbot railway station located nearby, providing connections across Devon and the South West.
Hours: Full time, 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Thurs 7:45-16:30 and Friday 7:45-12:15)
Contract: Permanent

Key Responsibilities
- Manage a caseload of participants, supporting the achievement of personal and team targets
- Provide careers advice and information, supporting participants to achieve work, learning and personal development goals
- Deal with challenging situations in a professional and confidential manner
- Ensure all information is recorded timely and accurately to the tracking system
- Deliver employability workshops and coordinate careers events/relevant speaker visits
Skills & Experience
- Level 4 qualification In Careers, Information, Advice and Guidance (or willingness to undertake)
- Experience in the delivery of careers advice to adults
- A good working knowledge of the local labour market
- Able to use a range of Microsoft Office programs, including 365 products and modern digital technologies i.e. Microsoft Teams
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Able to develop and sustain positive professional relationships
