Elvet Recruitment are working with a well-established client to recruit an experienced Health & Safety Manager to lead and develop health and safety standards across a diverse range of operations, including surfacing, civil engineering, earthworks and demolition.

Working closely with directors, Contracts Managers and site teams, the successful candidate will be responsible for implementing consistent health and safety practices, providing practical advice and driving continuous improvement across project sites, offices, yards, workshops, plant and transport operations.

This is a hands-on role suited to a confident, knowledgeable H&S professional with a strong technical background, a practical approach to risk management and the ability to challenge unsafe practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, review and implementation of health and safety policies, procedures and management systems across the group.
  • Undertake site visits and workplace audits to assess compliance, identify potential hazards and ensure remedial actions are followed through.
  • Provide guidance to project teams on construction phase plans, risk assessments and method statements, ensuring compliance with CDM 2015 requirements.
  • Offer specialist advice on high-risk construction activities, including demolition, groundworks, temporary works, lifting operations, working at height and plant movements.
  • Oversee occupational health measures, including exposure assessments and health surveillance, with particular focus on dust, noise, vibration and hazardous substances.
  • Monitor workforce training and competency requirements, maintaining accurate records and supporting site inductions, toolbox talks and employee engagement.
  • Review subcontractor safety documentation and contribute to client audits, pre-qualification assessments, accreditation processes and tender applications.
  • Monitor and report on health and safety performance, escalating key issues to senior management, liaising with clients and enforcing safe working practices where necessary, including stopping work when serious risks are identified.

Candidate Requirements

  • Previous experience in a Health & Safety Manager, Senior H&S Advisor or similar position within construction, civil engineering or demolition.
  • Comprehensive understanding of UK health and safety legislation, with experience overseeing safety across multiple sites or business units.
  • NEBOSH Diploma or an equivalent professional qualification, or significant relevant industry experience alongside progression towards this level.
  • Good understanding of construction activities, site operations, plant and equipment, and the practical challenges of maintaining safe working environments.
  • Excellent communication and organisational abilities, with strong investigative skills and the confidence to engage with everyone from site operatives to senior directors.
  • Full UK driving licence and flexibility to travel between operational sites as required.

Remuneration:

A salary of up to -65,000 (dependant upon experience) + Package
