Location: South London (Hybrid)
Travel: Quarterly travel to India during Year 1 (reducing in Year 2)

The Opportunity An established UK organisation is investing heavily in its technology function and is looking to appoint a Head of Infrastructure Engineering & Operations to lead the transformation of its infrastructure services.
This is a senior leadership role responsible for shaping the infrastructure strategy, improving operational resilience, strengthening governance, and ensuring technology services support the wider business effectively. You'll have the opportunity to modernise infrastructure operations, establish technical ownership across the estate, and drive measurable improvements in performance, availability and security.
This position would suit someone with a strong infrastructure engineering background who has progressed into leadership and enjoys balancing technical direction, architecture, operational excellence and vendor management.
The Role As Head of Infrastructure Engineering & Operations, you will provide technical leadership across the organisation's infrastructure estate, ensuring platforms are secure, scalable, commercially effective and aligned to business objectives.
You will work closely with internal stakeholders and third-party partners to improve service quality, embed governance, and deliver a more resilient infrastructure environment.
A key focus of the role will be delivering tangible operational improvements within your first six months.
Key Responsibilities Infrastructure Leadership & Operational Excellence

  • Provide technical leadership across all infrastructure platforms.
  • Establish clear ownership across infrastructure domains.
  • Improve platform resilience, stability and overall service performance.
  • Drive measurable improvements in availability, recovery capabilities and operational maturity.
  • Reduce major incidents through proactive lifecycle management.
  • Implement structured patching, upgrade and capacity planning.
  • Strengthen the organisation's cyber security posture.
Architecture & Technical Governance
  • Define and implement infrastructure architecture standards.
  • Ensure solutions are supportable, secure and fully documented.
  • Align infrastructure design with operational support capabilities.
  • Promote consistency, governance and best practice across all technology services.
Vendor & Commercial Management
  • Build strong governance frameworks for third-party suppliers.
  • Hold vendors accountable through structured performance reviews and service management.
  • Ensure technical standards are reflected within supplier contracts.
  • Work collaboratively with partners on infrastructure upgrades, migrations and remediation programmes.
Technology Environment You'll oversee a diverse enterprise infrastructure including:
  • VMware and Nutanix virtualisation
  • Windows Server environments
  • Microsoft Azure
  • Enterprise networking (LAN/WAN)
  • Network edge technologies
  • Citrix
  • Endpoint security platforms
  • Cyber and Information Security
  • Physical infrastructure and site technology
About You We're looking for someone who combines strong technical credibility with proven leadership experience.
You'll ideally have:
  • Significant experience leading enterprise infrastructure and operations teams.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft infrastructure technologies and Azure.
  • Experience managing virtualised environments, including VMware and/or Nutanix.
  • A solid understanding of infrastructure architecture and governance.
  • Experience implementing IT operational best practices and improving service maturity.
  • Strong vendor and supplier management experience.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • A proactive, hands-on approach with the ability to lead technology transformation.
