Cost Accountant

Location: London
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Contract: Permanent

We have partnered with a leading global financial services organisation looking to recruit a qualified Cost Accountant to join its London finance team.

Working within a complex international business, you will play an important role in maintaining accurate financial records, providing greater visibility over operating expenditure and strengthening financial controls. The position combines hands-on accounting with analytical responsibilities, offering the opportunity to work with stakeholders across the business and contribute to improvements in financial processes and reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take an active role in the month-end close, ensuring operating expenses are accurately captured through journals, accruals and prepayments.
  • Review financial transactions and expense classifications, resolving discrepancies and ensuring costs are recognised in the appropriate accounting periods.
  • Analyse expenditure across business areas, investigating variances and providing explanations for movements in costs.
  • Maintain accurate balance sheet reconciliations, identifying and resolving outstanding items.
  • Collaborate with finance teams and operational stakeholders to investigate queries, resolve accounting issues and improve the accuracy of financial information.
  • Support the allocation of shared expenses across group companies, including intercompany recharges and transfer pricing arrangements.
  • Contribute to the development of stronger financial controls and more effective cost reporting processes.
  • Provide supporting financial information and documentation for internal and external audits.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline existing accounting activities, reduce manual processes and introduce greater automation.

Skills & Experience

  • Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
  • Previous experience in a financial accounting, management accounting, expense accounting or similar role, with strong exposure to operating costs and month-end activities.
  • A sound understanding of accounting principles, particularly accruals, prepayments, expense recognition and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Strong analytical capabilities, with the ability to interpret financial data, investigate variances and identify inaccuracies.
  • Experience within financial services or another regulated environment is highly desirable. Candidates from large, complex multinational organisations with relevant accounting experience are also encouraged to apply.
  • Exposure to intercompany transactions, shared cost allocations or transfer pricing would be beneficial.
  • Advanced Excel skills, with confidence handling and analysing large financial datasets.
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage deadlines in a busy reporting environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with experience working collaboratively across finance and wider business functions.
  • A continuous improvement mindset, with an interest in strengthening financial processes, controls and automation.
