St George''s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust .This is a full-time 10 programmed activity paediatric intensive care post to be based at St George''s Hospital, however, with flexible working this may suit a candidate wishing to work LTFT. The post holder will assume clinical responsibility for all patients on the intensive care unit (PICU) and the satellite high dependency unit (PSDU) with other members of the intensive care team. The PICU is run as a closed unit but we operate a shared care system with the paediatric specialty or surgical specialty team responsible for ongoing management of their patients.This post welcomes applicants from related parent specialties such as paediatric anaesthesia.
Main duties
Take part in the dedicated PICU on-call rota (non-resident) on a 1 in 8 basis.
Take a lead within PICU for aspects of care (e.g., echocardiography, recruitment and induction, audit and quality improvement).
Support departmental interests in research and education, and develop a research profile that complements the department.
About UsSouth Thames has three paediatric intensive care units at St Thomas'' (Evelina London Children''s Hospital), King''s College Hospital and St George''s Hospital. The PICU at St George''s Hospital is multidisciplinary and serves infants, children and young people across various specialties. The unit currently runs 7 PICU beds and 7 HDU beds, with capacity to increase during busy periods. Children are admitted from within the hospital and from regional hospitals via retrieval services.

Person SpecificationQualification and Training
Essential:
MBBS or Equivalent
FRCA or MRCPCH or equivalent higher qualification
On Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining CCT in Paediatric Critical Care by date of interview
Completion of all competencies in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine (minimum of two years) in a unit approved for training by the RCPCH GRID with evidence of training signed off, including a minimum of six months of anaesthetic training or equivalent, or an existing Practising Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine
APLS/EPLS provider
Safeguarding Level 3
Desirable:
Higher Degree
Teaching qualifications
Higher level competence in Paediatric cardiology or evidence of competence in Paediatric echocardiography
Experience
Essential:
Competent in paediatric retrieval medicine and stabilisation of the critically ill child; experience in a paediatric major trauma centre and emergency department; experience in dealing with paediatric safeguarding cases; ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of critically ill paediatric patients.
Desirable:
APLS/EPLS trainer; teaching experience; research experience.
Skills
Essential: Proficient in practical skills for paediatric critical care; good written and verbal communication; IT competent; ability to research, develop and implement best clinical practice; ability to organise and manage the clinical team.
Desirable: Echocardiography Point of Care Ultrasound; Bronchoscopy.
Knowledge
Essential: Broad knowledge of paediatric critical care medicine; working knowledge of paediatric oncology; knowledge of research governance and Good Clinical Practice; understanding of management principles.
Desirable: Credentials supporting management training; evidence of training in paediatric oncology; knowledge of research governance procedures.
Other
Essential: Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team; willingness to form links within and outside the critical care network; professionalism; good interpersonal and communication skills; caring attitude to patients and parents; commitment to continuing medical education; flexible approach; commitment to the specialty; enthusiasm.
