The Opportunity
Are you an experienced mechanical leader with a proven track record of driving performance, quality, and a proactive safety culture on the shop floor?
-
We are seeking a high-caliber Workshop Supervisor to oversee the day-to-day production, maintenance, and heavy overhaul operations at our rail facility in Derby.
-
You will step onto the shop floor as the driving force behind our frontline team of technicians, fitters, and operatives.
If you are a problem-solver who takes pride in a "right first time" approach to technical workmanship and thrives in a fast-paced engineering environment, we want to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily workflow across vehicle maintenance, overhaul, and production tasks, ensuring all activities stick tightly to master schedules.
- Lead, motivate, and deploy technicians and fitters based on competency. Conduct daily shift briefings, toolbox talks, and manage on-the-job mentoring.
- Drive a world-class safety culture. Ensure all tasks strictly follow risk assessments and method statements (RAMS), carry out behavioral observations, and oversee safe lifting equipment operations.
- Guarantee all completed work meets rigid rail technical specifications. Manage non-conformances, carry out strict quality inspections, and lead continuous process improvements.
- Track labor, tool calibration, and material availability. Ensure all team training matrices and competency logs are fully compliant with rail industry regulatory standards.
Essential Criteria:
- A solid track record as a Supervisor, Team Leader, or Shift Manager within a rail maintenance, rolling stock overhaul, or heavy engineering environment.
- Strong, practical familiarity with rail vehicle mechanical/electrical components, production schedules, or bogie/vehicle overhaul processes.
Qualifications:
- A relevant engineering qualification (e.g., NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, or equivalent time-served apprenticeship).
- Deep understanding of health & safety regulations and managing safe systems of work.
- Strong communication skills with the confidence to manage resource constraints, resolve operational bottlenecks, and drive team KPIs.
- An industry-recognized safety qualification (e.g., IOSH Managing Safely).
- Lifting operations certifications (e.g., LOLER/LEEA awareness).
