Workshop Manager Bedford

To manage, lead and control both Fitters & Yardpeople to carrying out planned

maintenance activities to ensure that our plant operates safely and reliably.  The

maintenance will include PDIs, safety LOLER inspections, servicing and general damage

repairs. The Workshop & Yard Manager is responsible for driving productivity, ready

for rent standards and technical excellence in the workshop including 5S auditing

across two workshops.

Role dimensions/KPIs:

Describe what the role holder is accountable for e.g. number of hires, size of budget,

people responsibility, size of department etc.

• Accountable for workshop productivity, repair and maintenance of

Telehandlers and Roto Telehandlers at pace

• Supervise a team of Fitters to achieve best in ‘ready for rent’ standards in line

with R4RV3.

• Maintain machine Average days in service (PDI) <3.5

• Maintain machine Ave days VOR <10

• Accountable for approximately (Apply online only) machines on hire (aiming for >1k)

• Working to metrics to increase workshop productivity and reducing the time

between off hire to machine being ready for rent.

• Mechanical standards to minimise machine breakdowns (1st 7 days <1.75% KPI)

• Daily technical excellence standards of both workshops.

• Weekly 5S auditing and task management (Fitters & Yard staff)

• Source, make available and produce fleet numbers for the due for delivery

report in support of transport operations

Principal Responsibilities:

Describe the types of activities included in the role.

1. Lead & manage the Workshop and all fleet maintenance activity. planning,

assigning and reviewing the work of the workshop fitters & yard staff

2. Raise and allocate workshop jobs/workload to all fitters making best use of

resource.

3. Allocate yard tasks (derived from 5S) and brief DFD machine wash requirements

4. Ensure the machinery is fit for hire, turning around machines quickly and with

accuracy.

5. Coach & mentor the fitter team ensuring the correct level of competence,

efficiency, pace and behaviour.

6. Effectively manage stock levels in the workshop store to ensure readiness at

PDI.

7. Promote Health and Safety throughout the depot – in line with the 5S

philosophy.

8. React promptly and with effectiveness to the due for delivery report by briefing

and proactively planning to avoid any delay in machine delivery.

9. Ensure contract and customer specifications are adhered to including thorough

examination/PDI/Service.

10. Liaise with the Depot Manager and National Operations Manager to ensure

maximum availability of fleet.

11. Willingly perform ad hoc duties as required.

12. Deputise for the Depot Manager in his absence.

The Person

qualifications required.

Essential

• Recognised industry qualification (City & Guilds/NVQ 2/3 in Plant Maintenance)

• Able to demonstrate a full and varied knowledge of plant machinery

• Proven experience on plant vehicle repairs with an analytical approach to

problem solving

• Proven customer focus & service awareness

• Strong communication (written and verbal)

• Exceptional team player

• Exceptional organisational skills

• Basic computer skills

• Able to delegate and influence staff with robustness

• Excellent communication skills

• Excellent numeracy and literacy skills

• In possession of a full, valid driving licence, with no more than 3 points

Desirable

• Supervisory experience

• Management qualifications

• CSCS Card

• Experience of continuous improvement – particularly 5S

PLEASE NOTE THE HOURS ARE 52.5 hours per week (06:00 – 17:00) Mon – Fri
