We’re looking for a Waste Engineer ideally from a nuclear waste engineering background, although other high hazard sector candidates will be considered. Based at our Capenhurst site, the purpose of this role is xto provide advice within Urenco’s UNS entity on matters concerning management of radioactive and non-radioactive wastes including, but not limited to, the characterisation, management, production, storage, packaging and consignment of waste. The job holder will also ensure that waste is consigned from site compliantly in accordance with BAT and project (or facility) waste management plans whilst meeting the needs of operational or project teams.

What you’ll do:

• Ensures design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, customer contract requirements, and related specifications and legislation
• Provide waste management, characterisation and transport advice to all levels of the business and integrate with project management lifecycle
• Prepare waste documentation for the disposal / treatment of consignments of waste from the Capenhurst Site.
• Plan waste consignments.
• Act as main point of contact between the UNS Waste Services Team and other areas of the business. This person is expected to ensure that the waste management needs of operational areas and current and future projects are understood as early as possible so that UNS can provide an adequate service and that projects are not delayed.
• Responsible for ensuring that the site follows approved waste processes.
• Provide training and coaching to staff and contractors.
• Implementation of BAT and effective management of resources, that value to the business is ensured.
• Update waste activities on the project plan in accordance with PM requirements
• To ensure offsite transport of radioactive material and other dangerous goods meet regulatory standards
• Provide advice to UNS on characterisation of radioactive and non-radioactive wastes to ensure that work can be undertaken safely, and that the BAT waste option(s) can be chosen.

What do you need to thrive in this role

• Degree in a scientific or engineering based subject
• Certificate of competence to act as a Radioactive Waste Adviser
• Transport of Class 7 by Road Level 2 or Level 3
• experience working in a waste management position (such as Waste Engineer or Waste Adviser) on a nuclear licensed site or a site that works with radiological wastes.
• In depth knowledge of disposal and treatment routes for wastes in the UK and overseas
• Thorough understanding of legislation and frameworks that impact waste management in the UK Transport of Class 7 materials and wastes by Road
• Understanding of characterisation methodology for radioactive Desirable
• Promotes Safety 3 and non-radioactive wastes (including the Data Quality Objectives and Data Quality Assessment processes)
