Job Title: Waste Collection Operative
Location: Barnsley Council
Contract: 3-month ongoing
Hours: Monday - Friday, 6:00am - 3:45pm
 
Job Purpose
As a Waste Collection Operative, you will be part of a frontline team delivering essential waste collection services across Barnsley. The role is physically demanding, requires working outdoors in all weather conditions, and involves operating machinery safely while maintaining excellent customer service standards.
 
Key Responsibilities

• Undertake a wide range of operational duties in all weather conditions, requiring both physical effort and mental focus.
• Operate mechanical bin-lifting machinery daily, adhering strictly to health and safety procedures.
• Take responsibility for the safe use, maintenance, and security of vehicles, machinery, and equipment.
• Provide excellent customer service by being polite, courteous, and responsive to service improvement requests, and escalate issues to the driver, supervisor, or manager where necessary.
• Work under the guidance of the driver and supervisor, while also using personal initiative to ensure services are delivered professionally and to agreed standards.
• Adhere to schedules and targets, responding positively to new initiatives and directions from management.
• Promote and demonstrate safe working practices to colleagues, apprentices, trainees, and students when required.
• Comply at all times with Health & Safety regulations, Customer Care standards, Dignity at Work, and other relevant policies and legislation.
• Carry out any other duties reasonably required by management that are commensurate with the role.

Requirements

• Ability to carry out physically demanding outdoor work in all weather conditions.
• Awareness of and commitment to health and safety standards.
• Good communication skills and customer-focused attitude.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow guidance from supervisors.
• Flexibility to adapt to new initiatives and service requirements.
