Overview

Are you an experienced mentor, youth practitioner, or instructor with a gift for connecting with disaffected young people?

A reputable Alternative Provision serving the Colne (BB8), Nelson (BB9), and Burnley (BB10) areas is seeking a proactive Unqualified Teacher / SEMH Outreach Tutor for a full-time, temp-to-perm role.

This position does not require Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Instead, it requires high emotional resilience, empathy, and practical capability in re-engaging secondary-aged students (11-16+) with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, neurodivergence, and histories of school refusal or trauma.

Key Responsibilities

  • 1:1 & Small-Group Delivery: Deliver tailored, functional learning sessions in literacy, numeracy, personal development, and vocational life skills across local outreach hubs, community sites, and designated base settings.

  • Re-engagement & Mentoring: Build trusting, professional relationships with vulnerable learners to rebuild their confidence in education.

  • De-escalation & Regulation: Apply positive behaviour support and de-escalation strategies to manage complex, dysregulated behaviours safely.

  • Outreach Mobility: Travel between student locations and community sites across the Colne and wider BB postcode catchment.

  • Progress Monitoring: Log daily attendance, wellbeing notes, and academic progression to feed back into multi-agency and review meetings.

Candidate Requirements

  • Experience: Background working with challenging behaviour, SEMH, neurodivergence (ADHD/ASC), or disengaged youth (PRU, AP, Youth Work, or Residential Care backgrounds highly valued).

  • Instructional Confidence: Ability to design and run engaging, functional educational activities without direct supervision.

  • Driving Licence (Essential): Full UK Driving Licence with daily access to a vehicle (business mileage reimbursed where applicable).

  • Safeguarding: An Enhanced Child Workforce DBS on the DBS Update Service (or willingness to complete one).

  • Desirable: De-escalation training (Team Teach, MAPA, or CPI) and a solid understanding of trauma-informed approaches.

Package & Benefits

  • Salary: Up to -33,000 equivalent (starting on weekly agency PAYE at -135,68 - -154.80/day, transitioning to permanent school contract).

  • Security: Clear, structured pathway to a permanent contract with the provision.

  • Work-Life Balance: Monday to Friday, term-time daytime hours.

  • Support: Continuous access to funded professional development, safeguarding refreshers, and behaviour management training.
