Technical Project Engineer
A Technical Project Engineer is required for an established international business specialising in the supply of engineered components, replacement parts and wear parts for industrial machinery and equipment. The company works closely with customers and overseas manufacturers to develop and source mechanical components, including castings and machined parts.
This position would suit an engineer with a good understanding of mechanical components, particularly castings, who is comfortable interpreting drawings, establishing detailed technical requirements and working with manufacturers to take products through to production.
The role of Technical Project Engineer will include:
- Reviewing customer engineering drawings, specifications and component samples to establish technical and manufacturing requirements.
- Liaising with overseas manufacturers, predominantly in China, to discuss component specifications, materials, tolerances and manufacturing methods.
- Asking the appropriate technical questions to establish detailed engineering specifications and ensure manufacturers fully understand the requirements.
- Reviewing casting designs and specifications, including material selection, manufacturing feasibility, machining allowances and dimensional tolerances.
- Coordinating the development of new and replacement components from initial enquiry through sampling, customer approval and production.
- Reviewing samples, inspection reports and dimensional checks to ensure components meet the required specifications.
- Investigating manufacturing problems, casting defects and dimensional discrepancies, working with suppliers to agree suitable solutions.
- Maintaining technical documentation and coordinating projects to ensure agreed specifications, quality standards and delivery timescales are achieved.
The suitable candidate for Technical Project Engineer will need to possess the following skills and experience:
- A background in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, technical project engineering or a similar position.
- The ability to confidently read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications and component samples.
- Good technical knowledge of metal castings, including casting processes, materials, tolerances and common manufacturing defects.
- Sufficient engineering knowledge to question technical requirements, identify missing information and develop detailed manufacturing specifications.
- An understanding of other manufacturing processes, including machining, forging and fabrication.
- Experience dealing directly with manufacturers or suppliers to resolve technical queries and production issues.
- Experience coordinating component samples, inspections and approvals.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage several technical projects simultaneously.
- Good communication and organisational skills.
- Experience working with overseas manufacturers, particularly in China, would be advantageous.
- CAD experience would be useful, although this is not primarily a design engineering position.
The successful candidate will need to be technically confident, thorough and comfortable challenging information where necessary. An important part of the position involves ensuring that manufacturers have the correct information to produce components accurately, rather than simply passing drawings and specifications between customers and suppliers.
