Technical Lead - Building Regulations

Location: North East (Flexible / Hybrid Working Available)

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Technical Lead - Building Regulations to provide technical leadership, regulatory guidance and assurance across a range of building projects.

The successful candidate will have strong knowledge of UK Building Regulations, construction methodology, building materials, occupancy requirements and compliance processes. You will be responsible for reviewing technical information, providing expert advice and ensuring projects meet statutory and regulatory requirements.

This role offers flexible working arrangements and would suit an experienced technical professional from a background in building control, construction, engineering, surveying, compliance or technical assurance.



Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a technical lead providing expert guidance on Building Regulations compliance and construction standards.
  • Review and interpret technical drawings, specifications, reports and supporting documentation.
  • Assess building types, occupancy classifications and proposed uses to determine regulatory requirements.
  • Review construction methods, materials and building systems to ensure suitability and compliance.
  • Apply knowledge of Building Regulations 2000 - Part 2A requirements, including the assessment and recording of relevant technical information and methodologies.
  • Support the preparation, review and approval of compliance documentation.
  • Provide technical input into design reviews, risk assessments and project decision-making.
  • Identify potential compliance issues and provide practical solutions to resolve technical challenges.
  • Maintain awareness of changes in legislation, guidance notes and industry best practice.
  • Work collaboratively with clients, consultants, contractors, designers and internal stakeholders.
  • Provide technical mentoring and support to colleagues where required.
  • Assist with continuous improvement of technical processes, procedures and quality standards.


Technical Knowledge & Experience Required

  • Strong working knowledge of UK Building Regulations and associated guidance.
  • Experience assessing building compliance, construction details and technical submissions.
  • Understanding of building construction methods, materials and structural principles.
  • Knowledge of different building types, occupancy requirements and risk profiles.
  • Experience interpreting drawings, specifications and construction documentation.
  • Understanding of fire safety, means of escape, accessibility and general building performance requirements.
  • Experience working within a regulated environment such as:
    • Building Control
    • Construction
    • Engineering
    • Surveying
    • Design consultancy
    • Technical assurance


Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent technical judgement and problem-solving ability.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to analyse complex information.
  • Confident communicator with the ability to explain technical requirements clearly.
  • Strong report writing and documentation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Professional approach when dealing with clients and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a wider team.


Desirable Experience

  • Experience working as a Technical Lead, Building Control Surveyor, Compliance Manager, Technical Manager or similar role.
  • Relevant construction, surveying or engineering qualifications.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body such as RICS, CABE, CIOB or ICE.
  • Experience with digital compliance platforms and technical information management systems.
