Surface Designer – Mechanical Design Focus

Location: Westwoodside, Doncaster
Salary: £35,000–£45,000 DOE + Overtime + Benefits

A leading manufacturer of high-end, bespoke motorhomes is seeking an experienced Surface Designer with a mechanical engineering background. This is a key role for someone who can balance visual design with manufacturability, working closely with engineers to deliver precise, production-ready surfaces.

Role Overview

The Surface Designer will take ownership of both the visual and structural aspects of exterior and interior motorhome surfaces. The ideal candidate will be confident in CAD surface modelling and capable of turning concept ideas into designs suitable for composite moulding and real-world production.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop surface designs with attention to form, texture, and material suitability

• Create detailed 3D surface models using SolidWorks Surfacing and Power Surfacing

• Collaborate with engineers and design teams to ensure technical feasibility

• Prepare mould-ready designs for fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) components

• Interpret and work from engineering drawings and design briefs

• Present a professional portfolio demonstrating creative and technical design

Required Experience

• Minimum 3 years’ experience in surface design (automotive, motorhomes, consumer products, etc.)

• Proficient in SolidWorks Surfacing and Power Surfacing

• Strong understanding of mechanical assemblies, tolerancing, and manufacturing processes

• Ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced production environment

• Full UK Driving Licence (required)

Desirable Skills

• Rendering experience (e.g. KeyShot, V-Ray)

• Background in materials or finishes selection

• Understanding of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) principles
