Location: Broadstairs

Salary: -25,000 - -28,000 dependent on relevant skills and experience. (Salary is reviewed annually, with any increase normally taking effect on 1st January each year)

Purpose of Role:

To provide tailored academic and pastoral support to students enrolled on University Programmes, enabling them to overcome barriers to learning, develop effective academic skills, remain engaged with their studies, and achieve their full academic and personal potential.

Key Responsibilities:

Academic Support & Student Development;

  • Develop, implement, review and monitor Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) to support student progression.
  • Deliver one-to-one and group academic support sessions covering study skills, academic writing, referencing, assessment preparation and research skills.
  • Provide regular formative feedback on student assessments and support students in interpreting summative feedback.
  • Guide students in understanding assessment briefs, learning outcomes and grading criteria.
  • Deliver workshops on referencing, plagiarism awareness, research methods, presentation skills and digital literacy.
  • Recommend appropriate learning resources to support student achievement.
  • Maintain accurate records of academic support sessions, student progress and interventions.
  • Work collaboratively with academic staff to ensure academic support aligns with programme requirements.

Student Engagement & Progress Monitoring;

  • Monitor student attendance, engagement and academic performance using College systems.
  • Identify students who may be at risk of disengagement or academic underperformance and provide timely intervention.
  • Follow College procedures for contacting and supporting students with poor attendance.
  • Record student meetings, interventions and agreed action plans accurately.
  • Support the implementation and review of Individual Learning Plans.
  • Contribute to student retention, engagement and progression initiatives.
  • Act as a key point of contact for students throughout their programme of study.

Communication & Collaboration;

  • Liaise effectively with lecturers, programme teams and student support services to coordinate student support.
  • Attend programme meetings, progress boards and case conferences as required.
  • Maintain accurate student records on College systems, including the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
  • Prepare reports relating to student engagement, attendance, academic concerns and support activities.
  • Build positive, supportive and professional relationships with students and colleagues.

Quality Assurance & Professional Practice;

  • Support internal quality assurance processes and academic audits.
  • Ensure all support activities comply with University academic regulations and Nelson College London policies and procedures.
  • Participate in mandatory training and Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of academic support services.

The successful candidate should possess the knowledge, skills and experience required to perform the role effectively and demonstrate the following essential (E) and desirable (D) criteria.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree or professional qualification relevant to education, learning development, academic skills or student support (E)
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) (D)
  • Experience of providing academic support within Higher Education (E)
  • Experience delivering one-to-one and group academic skills sessions (E)
  • Experience supporting mature, widening participation or international students (D)
  • Experience contributing to student retention and engagement initiatives (D)

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Excellent knowledge of academic writing, referencing, study skills and research techniques (E)
  • Understanding of Higher Education assessment processes and academic regulations (D)
  • Ability to develop and monitor Individual Learning Plans (E)
  • Strong organisational and time management skills (E)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (E)
  • Excellent interpersonal and student support skills (E)
  • Ability to identify and support students at risk of disengagement (E)
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft Office 365 and Virtual Learning Environments (E)
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team (E)
  • Good literacy and numeracy (Level 2 English and Maths or equivalent) (E)
