ST4/Clinical Fellow in Paediatrics

OverviewApplicants are invited for ST4 or above Tier 2 trainee or Clinical Fellow in Paediatrics for Colchester Hospital. We have 2 posts available to start in September or December 2025. We are recruiting to maintain a fully staffed rota, seeking passionate doctors who will work alongside our consultants and wider MDT to deliver high quality care and develop our service. There will be opportunity to develop subspecialty interest and support provided with sitting for clinical examination. The clinical duties will include attending to and managing paediatric patients presenting to the Children''s Assessment Unit, which might include referrals from primary care and Emergency medicine, leading ward rounds and attending to paediatric emergencies. They will also cover the neonatal unit, postnatal ward and attend to neonatal emergencies on the labour ward and theatres. The post holder will be working closely and overseeing the Tier 1 doctors and nurse practitioners on the Tier 1 rota. We are a very supportive group of consultants who will be working closely with the appointee and supervising them. Ipswich is a busy District General Hospital and the post-holder will have a good opportunity to gain wide experience in Paediatrics.
Responsibilities
Assess and manage paediatric patients in the Children''s Ward, Neonatal Unit, and on the Labour Ward as required, including participation in ward rounds under supervision.
Assess and manage sick children in the Children''s Assessment Unit and in the Emergency Department when an opinion is requested, including emergencies and resuscitations.
Attend difficult obstetric deliveries and resuscitation of newborn infants.
Weekly outpatient clinic under consultant supervision; general outpatient and rapid referral clinic; and acute emergency cover as per the training timetable.
Participate in the Tier 2 (middle grade) out-of-hours medical rota on a pro-rata basis, including evening, night and weekend shifts.
Dedicated admin time to ensure all paperwork and communication with other services is up-to-date.
Participation in clinical supervision of junior medical staff and collaboration with medical and nursing teams and MDT members to ensure seamless care for children and families.
Outpatient clinics in the post holder''s specialist area.
Undertake child protection medicals under supervision of the attending consultant where required.
