Specialty Doctor Anaesthesia

OverviewJob summary: This is a full-time 10 PA substantive post for a Specialty Doctor in Anaesthesia. The post holder will cover theatre lists independently as per the agreed job plan. Occassionally the specialty doctor may be called upon to partake in a 1:8 on call on the senior obstetric on-call rota. The mutually agreed job plan will reflect the flexible nature of the role and can be expected to evolve and change over time.
ResponsibilitiesThe post holder will be expected to cover theatre lists independently as per the agreed job plan. The post may include being part of a shift rota covering out-of-hours obstetrics or similar general duties on a 1:8 shift rota (up to 2 additional PAs where applicable). The on-call component may involve support for the on-call non-resident general consultant on-call rota overnight, supervised by a consultant anaesthetist locally or distant on a case-by-case basis. Timetabled duties will evolve to meet departmental needs, including 7-day working delivery, with flexibility to changes following mutual discussion. Participation in formal educational sessions, clinical governance, and quality improvement activity is encouraged. The department supports training as clinical and educational supervisors to teach trainees and medical students. The post holder will be able to work independently and unsupervised and will have full GMC registration with a licence to practise. The appointment will be made under the terms of the 2021 SAS contract.
SPA activity will be job planned accordingly within the limits of the European Working Time Directive.
The department will consider support for suitably experienced appointees pursuing PMETB Article 14 route to specialist registration including educational supervision and career guidance.
About usThe Department of Anaesthesia at Homerton Hospital developed as a satellite service from St. Bartholomew''s Hospital in 1986 and is now an independent department within the SWNS directorate. We have strong links with Barts Health NHS Trust and are the first department in the UK to gain service accreditation under the Royal College of Anaesthetists ACSA scheme in 2014, 2018 and 2023. The department is housed in new purpose-built accommodation within the main theatre complex, with seminar facilities, trainee workstations, office space, IT access, projection equipment, and up-to-date textbooks. There is full-time secretarial support.

Person SpecificationProfessional Qualifications
Essential: Full registration with General Medical Council with a licence to practise MB ChB (or equivalent)
Desirable: Primary or Full FRCA or equivalent
Resuscitation skill
Essential: PLS/BLS/ILS
Desirable: ATLS, ACLS, APLS
Clinical knowledge, skills, training and experience
Essential: Minimum 2 years recent experience working in anaesthesia within the NHS
Essential: Experience of working in ITU without supervision
Essential: Ability to undertake initial resuscitation and stabilisation of the critically ill child
Essential: Initial assessment of competence in anaesthesia, obstetrics anaesthesia
