Site Engineer

VGC Group are recruiting for the following position:

Role – Site Engineer 

Location – Ardrossan (KA22 8LY)

Salary/Rate – Negotiable. Must be either PAYE or Umbrella PAYE 

Duration – Starting Wednesday 6th May. Short term deployment 

Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Site Engineer to join a Tier 1 construction project team. The role requires strong technical expertise in setting out, gridlines, steel frame erection, and reinforced concrete slab construction, with a proven ability to manage tolerances, accuracy, and quality on complex builds. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring works are delivered safely, accurately, and in accordance with design and programme requirements. Must have own laptop and software. All other equiptment supplied. 

Key Responsibilities

Setting Out & Engineering Control

• Establish, maintain, and manage site gridlines, datums, and benchmarks in line with approved drawings and specifications.
• Carry out precise setting out for steel frame erection, columns, beams, cores, and RC slabs.
• Ensure setting out is within specified tolerances, identifying and resolving clashes or discrepancies early.
• Check and validate setting out completed by subcontractors.

Steel Frame & Structural Works

• Support and oversee steel erection works, ensuring correct alignment, levels, plumb, and bolt tolerances.
• Liaise with steelwork contractors to resolve technical issues and sequencing challenges.
• Carry out pre- and post-erection checks and maintain accurate as-built records.

Slab Setting Out & Concrete Works

• Set out RC slabs, edge forms, openings, kickers, inserts, and cast-in items using gridlines and detailed drawings.
• Monitor slab levels, flatness, and thickness to achieve required finish and tolerances.
• Coordinate with formwork, reinforcement, and concrete subcontractors.

Quality, Compliance & Documentation

• Ensure all works comply with engineering best practice, specifications, drawings, and relevant British Standards.
• Complete and maintain QA records, inspections, as-builts, and red-line drawings.
• Identify, report, and assist in resolving design or site-based engineering issues.

Health, Safety & Coordination

• Promote and enforce health, safety, and environmental standards on site.
• Support RAMS reviews and ensure engineering activities are carried out safely.
• Coordinate closely with site management, design teams, and subcontractors to meet programme targets.

Required Experience:

• Proven experience as a Site Engineer on Tier 1 or large-scale construction projects.
• Strong experience in gridlines, setting out, steel frame erection, and slab construction.
• Demonstrable understanding of construction tolerances and quality control.
• Proficient with surveying equipment (e.g. total station, GPS, dumpy/laser levels).
• Able to interpret complex structural and GA drawings.
• Strong organisational and communication skills.

Required Qualifications:

• Degree or HNC/HND in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related discipline.
• Experience on multi-storey commercial, industrial, or infrastructure projects.
• Familiarity with digital engineering tools (e.g. CAD, BIM, surveying software).
