An experienced Senior Structural Engineer is required to join an established, employee-owned Civil and Structural Engineering consultancy based in Cardiff. Established for over 35 years, the practice works with public and private sector clients across a diverse portfolio of projects throughout South Wales and the wider UK.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Structural Engineer looking for greater technical ownership and project responsibility within a close-knit consultancy. Working as part of an established Structural team, you will lead larger projects from a technical perspective, coordinate directly with clients and multidisciplinary design teams and oversee project delivery. The position offers considerable variety, ranging from domestic and heritage projects through to schools, colleges, healthcare facilities, major residential developments and industrial schemes, alongside specialist temporary works and steelwork connection design.



Principal Structural Engineer Salary & Benefits

  • Salary -50,000 - -60,000 DOE, with potential flexibility for an exceptional candidate.

Principal Structural Engineer Job Overview

  • Take technical ownership of a varied portfolio of Structural Engineering projects.
  • Lead the structural design and delivery of larger and more technically complex schemes.
  • Work across projects ranging from smaller domestic developments through to -15m+ residential, Education, Healthcare and Industrial schemes.
  • Undertake structural analysis and design across a range of construction materials.
  • Produce and review structural calculations, specifications, reports and technical information.
  • Coordinate structural designs with Architects, Civil Engineers and other members of the multidisciplinary design team.
  • Liaise directly with clients, contractors and other project stakeholders.
  • Attend design team meetings and provide technical advice throughout project delivery.
  • Undertake site inspections and surveys where required.
  • Provide technical guidance and supervision to other members of the Structural Engineering team.
  • Review engineering designs and ensure high technical standards are maintained.
  • Contribute to restoration and heritage projects involving existing and historic structures.
  • Undertake or support temporary works design.
  • Undertake or coordinate steelwork connection design.
  • Support projects from initial concept and feasibility through detailed design and construction.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing and new clients.


Principal Structural Engineer Job Requirements

  • Degree qualified in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Strong Structural Engineering consultancy experience.
  • Ideally operating at Senior or Principal Engineer level and ready to take significant technical ownership.
  • Chartered Engineer status with IStructE or ICE would be highly advantageous, although strong candidates working towards Chartership will be considered.
  • Strong experience designing structures using a range of materials including steel, reinforced concrete, masonry and timber.
  • Experience leading Structural Engineering projects from initial design through to construction.
  • Strong understanding of structural analysis, design principles and UK construction standards.
  • Experience working directly with clients, Architects, contractors and multidisciplinary consultants.
  • Comfortable taking responsibility for larger projects and supervising their technical delivery.
  • Strong communication and client-facing skills.
  • Experience with temporary works and/or steelwork connection design would be advantageous.
  • Experience with existing buildings, refurbishment or heritage structures would also be beneficial.
  • Able to work independently while contributing effectively within a close-knit engineering team.
  • No formal line-management responsibility is required, although the successful candidate should be comfortable providing technical support and guidance to other Engineers.
  • Must have the existing right to work in the UK without requiring immediate sponsorship.
