Discord is looking for an experienced
Senior Regulatory Counsel
to join our legal team. This role will focus on leading and executing Discord''s regulatory response and proactive engagement strategies across the
EU/UK
and
Australia , particularly concerning
online safety
and
content moderation . This is a dynamic, fast-paced role suited to someone who thrives in a rapidly changing regulatory landscape. You’ll be instrumental in ensuring our compliance while also advocating for Discord’s interests as we navigate the evolving legal environment.What You’ll Be Doing:
Regulatory Response : Lead Discord’s responses to regulatory requests. Assess risks and opportunities, gather necessary data, and draft compelling, accurate responses to meet obligations and promote Discord’s interests.Engagement with Regulators : Present Discord’s approach to regulatory compliance to relevant authorities and stakeholders. Build strong relationships with regulators to ensure our practices align with evolving regulations.Collaboration : Work alongside product counsel on regulatory compliance-related updates to products, ensuring that changes align with legal requirements.Monitoring Regulations : Stay informed on new and updated regulations in the UK, EU, and Australia, anticipating enforcement risks and guiding the organization on compliance.Cross-Department Collaboration : Partner with public policy and communications teams to shape Discord’s safety communications and ensure a consistent narrative across platforms.Templates and Practices : Maintain up-to-date templates for company practices on key topics like privacy, security, and teen safety. Ensure the company’s practices align with legal and regulatory requirements.Defensive Legal Matters : If workload permits, support defensive responses to consumer complaints, small claims, and other related issues.What You Should Have:
Experience : 10+ years working in
regulatory law
related to internet regulation, specifically around
user safety, minor safety, privacy, data protection,
and
consumer protection .Knowledge : In-depth understanding of
UK/EU
and
Australia
regulatory landscapes, including the
UK and Australian Online Safety Act
and the
EU Digital Services Act . Familiarity with
GDPR ,
AI Act , and other privacy/data protection laws is a plus.Regulatory Engagement : Experience working with regulators in the UK, EU, or Australia and responding to formal inquiries from regulatory agencies.Licensing : A valid license to practice law in a relevant jurisdiction.Industry Experience : Prior experience working in the
social media, communication/messaging, content , or
gaming industries
is highly preferred.Project Management : Proven ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize effectively, and achieve results.Emotional Intelligence : Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate strategically, independently, and with sound judgment.Diversity and Inclusion : A commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and belonging in the workplace.Bonus Points:
Familiarity with
