Overview
The Meridian One Community Garden is a meanwhile space which primarily grows fruit, salad and vegetable crops. We engage local people in the garden through weekly volunteer gardening sessions, school visits and other community events. TCV are looking for a Senior Project Officer who has skills and experience in community engagement, delivering events and experience of managing a community facility. The community garden was established three years ago, and the site includes an office, community meeting/education room, toilets and a large polytunnel.Responsibilities
Lead the delivery of community events and activities, including under 5s Nature Explorers outdoor playgroup, school visits, themed evening events and weekend family events.Plan and deliver large community events (e.g., family weekends) and lead on associated tasks such as health and safety, risk assessments and procurement of materials.Manage administration tasks on time, including procurement, creating risk assessments, updating social media posts and completing task reports.Lead a team of volunteers in practical tasks (e.g., building large raised wooden planters) and supporting garden maintenance during spring and summer.Deliver corporate volunteering sessions and provide holiday cover for weekly Green Gym gardening sessions.Coordinate wider events and programmes such as women’s pampering and enrichment evenings, Repurpose and Recycle workshops, and a Black Women in Conservation and Horticulture photography exhibition.Lead occasional practical food growing and conservation activities with volunteers.Public-facing role requiring welcoming and approachable interaction with a wide range of stakeholders, from toddlers to vulnerable adults, corporate volunteers and funders.Collaborate with two other part-time Project Officers and participate in ongoing training and support from the team.Plan and lead on evening and weekend events (approximately six evening events between April and September and four weekend family events per year).Ensure work is carried out from the garden during usual hours (9am–5pm, Monday to Friday), with limited home working except in exceptional circumstances.Qualifications and Experience
Experience in community engagement, delivering events and managing a community facility or centre.Practical experience of day-to-day management of a community garden or community centre is desirable.Ideally experience in gardening and/or nature conservation; equally important are initiative, friendliness, and the ability to work with a wide range of people.Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups including toddlers, vulnerable adults, corporate volunteers and funders.Residence in the UK and right to work in the UK.Hours and Location
Usual working hours are 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. The Senior Project Officer will need to work from the garden during these times; home working is limited except in exceptional circumstances. Weekend family events take place on Saturdays, four times a year, and there are approximately six evening events from April to September.
