An exciting opportunity has arisen to meet the growing portfolio of projects within one of the UK’s leading independent consultancies. PJA is a specialist design practice with an integrated approach to Transport, Placemaking and Engineering. Our holistic approach ensures both innovative and deliverable design solutions and supports our vision to create better places through good design.

The role will require working across a range of different projects although the focus will initially be on meeting our commitments on active travel, traffic engineering and placemaking projects which are located across a wide spread of geographies.

Our ideal candidate

Our ideal candidate will be educated to degree level or above and will have experience of delivering and project managing small to medium sized commissions with both public and private sector clients with only minimal supervision required. As a confident communicator verbally and in writing, they will be required to present and communicate their ideas clearly and concisely both internally and also to a wide range of external audiences.

Ideally, the applicant should be able to demonstrate a strong interest in active travel and placemaking and have evidence of planning and/or designing walking and cycling infrastructure at differing levels of granularity – although detailed design experience is not essential for this position.

They Will Also Have

Good understanding of new cycle design standardsGood knowledge of Healthy Streets / Streets for All /Streets for People design principlesProject Management experience of smaller commissionsExpertise in producing clear and unambiguous design proposals – mainly at concept stageExperienced in the use of CAD in the design of horizontal alignments

We are looking for a Strategic thinker who is able to apply design standards effectively, someone who is a team player but can operate largely without supervision.

The Following Would Also Be Desirable

Experience in Traffic Engineering – specifically the incorporation of active travel and public transport infrastructure with urban street networksKnowledge of S278 /S38 agreements for roads and drainageExperience of engaging with, and negotiating with highway and planning authorities to agree proposed designPractical experience of cycling (utility, leisure or sport)Knowledge of Network Planning techniques, particularly LCWIPs.Knowledge of Low Traffic / Active NeighbourhoodsExperience of working with public interest groups and local elected members in some capacityKnowledge of development planning and wider transport planning specialismsUse of software programmes such as GIS, Junctions 10, LINSIG and / or design packages such as Civils3D ADOBE, Illustrator etcThe ability to produce technical reports and design specification the ability to produce and review fee proposalsExperience of the financial management and control of projects and working knowledge of different contract types and procurement options.
