Are you interested in working with a reputed international sustainability organisation to influence policy developments on sustainability globally? ISEAL is hiring a Senior Policy Officer to join our team responsible for public engagement and policy influencing. This role supports the management of policy engagement and aims to strengthen the role of voluntary sustainability tools alongside emerging mandatory measures. The team’s core objective is to help governments, civil society and business influencers understand, identify and use credible sustainability systems, through direct engagement with government bodies, engagement with businesses and business platforms, and building member awareness about relevant policy files and implications of new policies for their schemes and impact. The team focuses on the UK, Switzerland, EU-wide policy, key EU member states, and countries in the global south including Colombia, Indonesia, India and Brazil. The Senior Policy Officer will drive engagement with policymakers in strategic regions to influence the sustainability policy narrative and policy developments, identify engagement opportunities, and provide analysis of policy trends. The role collaborates with ISEAL members in these regions to align on policy influencing.Responsibilities
Support ISEAL’s strategic engagement with identified key policymaker targets and audiences from a policy influencing and voluntary tools perspectiveMonitor policy developments in key areas and jurisdictions and provide insights and analysis to inform policy engagement workIdentify opportunities for engagement with relevant policymakers and government agencies in key jurisdictions and engage with them as delegated and supported by colleaguesArrange direct meetings and other engagement opportunities for ISEAL, coordinate input, advise on engagement, and prepare briefs, reports and submissionsContribute to developing engagement and influencing strategies and to ISEAL’s policy positionsProvide internal advisory support to other teams on critical policy files based on subject matter and jurisdiction knowledgeSupport the team in developing policy papers, position papers, press releases, and strategic messaging on policy issuesFacilitate webinars and workshops on policy topicsTrack policy developments and analyse how they affect sustainability systems and ISEAL’s and members’ interestsHelp shape ISEAL’s global policy engagement and outreach in the next strategy periodConduct or support background research on specific regulatory proposals and policy frameworksSupport member-facing policy activities liaising with the rest of the teamProvide policy advice and analysis on priority topics as requestedParticipate actively in team and organisational planning and activitiesParticipate in internal staff management processes such as performance reviews and supervisory meetingsQualifications
Postgraduate degree in a relevant subject (e.g. sustainability or environmental studies, human rights, law, international development/ social policy, EU policy) and/or equivalent work experienceProven experience working in a policy context as part of civil society or within a government departmentGood working knowledge of the sustainability policy landscape and key debatesStrong skills in policy analysis and policy intelligenceExcellent written and spoken English communication skills; ability to synthesise informationPrior exposure to sustainability standards and policy issues related to human rights, climate, nature, due diligenceExperience with public speaking, e.g., facilitating webinars or workshopsAbility to work effectively with cross-functional teams in a largely remote, international environment, with occasional international time-zone callsProficiency with IT systems, virtual meeting tools (e.g., MS Teams, Skype, GoToMeeting), contact management databases (e.g., Salesforce) and MS OfficeDesirable: Spanish language skillsExperience working with remote managers and teamsExposure to strategic policy questions and global south development issuesBenefits and Additional Information
