Senior Highway Design Engineer
Location: Central London (Office-based with flexibility for home working depending on project requirements)
Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Design Engineer to join their growing London Projects team. This is an outstanding opportunity for a highways design professional who enjoys remaining hands-on with technical delivery while also supporting, mentoring and developing junior engineers and technicians.
Working on behalf of Transport for London and London Borough clients, you will play a key role in the successful delivery of a diverse portfolio of highway improvement schemes across the capital. The ideal candidate will be based within commuting distance of Central London and be willing to attend project sites as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce and review highway design drawings, specifications and technical reports.
- Act as Design Lead across multiple concurrent highway projects.
- Lead design activities throughout the full project lifecycle, from concept through to delivery.
- Manage project programmes and ensure key design milestones are achieved.
- Support, mentor and develop engineers, graduates and technicians within the team.
- Ensure all designs are safe, buildable and compliant with relevant industry standards and regulations.
- Support delegated Principal Designer duties in accordance with CDM regulations.
- Liaise effectively with clients, stakeholders and internal operational teams.
- Provide technical guidance, design assurance and quality reviews across the wider design team.
- Support commercial performance, forecasting and delivery against framework requirements.
Requirements
- Proven experience delivering highways design projects within London or similar urban environments.
- Strong working knowledge of UK highway design standards and legislation.
- Previous experience working within consultancy, contractor or framework delivery environments.
- Experience designing carriageway, footway, cycling, bus priority and public realm schemes.
- Good understanding of CDM Regulations and highway safety requirements.
- Demonstrable ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong commercial awareness and programme management capability.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and industry-standard highway design software.
