Location: London, UK
Employment type: Full-time, Permanent
Working arrangement: Hybrid / Flexible working
About the Opportunity
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join a growing geotechnical team within a leading multidisciplinary engineering consultancy based in London.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced geotechnical professional to take a key role in delivering technically challenging projects across the built environment and infrastructure sectors. Working alongside experienced engineers and specialists across multiple disciplines, you will contribute to the development of innovative, practical and cost-effective engineering solutions.
The project portfolio offers a varied mix of geotechnical challenges, from foundation design and temporary works to deep basements, retaining structures and complex ground–structure interaction problems. You will have the opportunity to take technical ownership of projects, build strong client relationships and contribute to the continued growth of the geotechnical team.
The Role
As a Senior Geotechnical Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality engineering solutions across all stages of project development, from feasibility and concept design through to detailed design and construction support.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Leading and delivering geotechnical design packages for a diverse range of building and infrastructure projects.
- Designing and assessing shallow and deep foundations, including piles, rafts and piled raft foundations.
- Undertaking the design and analysis of deep excavations, basements, retaining walls and temporary earth-retaining systems.
- Carrying out soil–structure interaction assessments, settlement analyses and ground movement predictions.
- Developing practical and efficient geotechnical solutions that consider safety, buildability, programme and cost.
- Preparing and reviewing technical reports, design calculations, specifications and other project deliverables.
- Reviewing ground investigation information and interpreting geotechnical data to inform design decisions.
- Coordinating with structural, civil and other engineering disciplines to deliver integrated design solutions.
- Providing technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers, supporting their professional development.
- Managing project tasks, resources, budgets and deadlines while maintaining high standards of technical quality.
- Liaising directly with clients, contractors, architects and other stakeholders to develop effective engineering solutions.
- Contributing to technical reviews, business development activities and the continued development of the geotechnical team.
About You
We are looking for a technically strong and commercially aware geotechnical engineer who enjoys solving complex engineering problems and working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary environment.
You will ideally have:
- A degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Significant relevant experience in geotechnical engineering, ideally within an engineering consultancy.
- A strong technical background in foundation engineering, deep excavations, retaining structures and ground movement assessment.
- Experience delivering geotechnical design solutions for complex buildings, basements or infrastructure projects.
- A sound understanding of relevant British Standards, Eurocodes and UK geotechnical design guidance.
- Proficiency in relevant geotechnical analysis and design software, such as PLAXIS 2D/3D, Oasys XDisp, WallAP, Settle3 and SLOPE/W, or equivalent packages.
- The ability to independently develop design solutions, undertake calculations and produce clear, robust technical reports.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary design work and managing project deliverables.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to engage with clients and other project stakeholders.
- A proactive approach to problem-solving, technical quality and continuous professional development.
- The ability to support and mentor less experienced engineers.
Chartered status with the ICE or another relevant professional institution, or a clear commitment to achieving chartership, would be advantageous.
Why Join
This is an opportunity to join a collaborative engineering environment where technical excellence, practical design and professional development are valued.
You will benefit from:
- Exposure to technically challenging and varied projects across multiple sectors.
- The opportunity to work alongside experienced specialists across geotechnical, civil and structural engineering.
- A collaborative culture that encourages knowledge-sharing, innovation and continuous improvement.
- Opportunities to take ownership of projects and develop your technical and client-facing responsibilities.
- Support for professional development, further qualifications and chartership.
- Flexible working arrangements that support a healthy work–life balance.
- The opportunity to contribute to the growth and direction of an expanding geotechnical team.
