Senior Electronics Design Engineer
Senior Electronics Design Engineer
If you''re a Senior Electronics Design Engineer who still wants to be the person solving the difficult technical problems, rather than moving away from hands-on engineering, this could be a very good fit.
You''ll be joining an established electronics design and manufacturing environment working on technically challenging products across sectors including Automotive, Defence & Aerospace, Medical, Space, Communications, Clean Energy and Scientific Research.
The projects are varied, the designs can be complex, and you''ll have genuine ownership of the hardware you work on. This is a role for an engineer who enjoys getting stuck into a difficult design, making the right technical decisions and seeing their work progress all the way through to a working, manufacturable product.
What You''ll Be Doing
As a Senior Electronics Design Engineer, you''ll take responsibility for hardware designs from the early architecture and concept stages through to development, validation and production.
You''ll be involved in:
-
Taking ownership of electronic hardware designs from initial requirements through to a proven, manufacturable product.
-
Interpreting customer requirements and specifications, identifying gaps, risks and technical challenges early.
-
Designing analogue and digital circuits, including microcontroller-based systems.
-
Selecting components, carrying out simulations and worst-case analysis, and providing a clear technical rationale for your design decisions.
-
Working closely with PCB layout engineers to define constraints, review layouts and ensure the finished board meets the required performance.
-
Bringing your own designs to life in the lab through board bring-up, testing, measurement and fault-finding.
-
Designing with DFM, DFT, EMC and compliance requirements in mind from the outset.
-
Supporting EMC, safety, qualification and validation activities through to successful completion.
-
Producing and reviewing technical documentation including specifications, test plans, reports and design review documentation.
-
Taking part in technical and design reviews, providing constructive challenge and helping maintain high engineering standards.
-
Supporting quotations and proposals with technical input, estimates and engineering solutions.
-
Joining technical discussions with customers and confidently explaining and defending your design decisions.
-
Managing your own workload and project timescales while identifying technical risks before they become problems.
-
Acting as a technical point of reference for other engineers and supporting the development of less experienced team members.
What We''re Looking For
This Senior Electronics Design Engineer position will suit someone who has built genuine depth in hardware engineering and wants to remain technically involved.
You should have:
-
A degree or equivalent qualification in Electronics Engineering or a related discipline.
-
Significant commercial experience designing electronic hardware from concept through to production.
-
A strong track record of taking ownership of designs and delivering working products.
-
Experience with mixed analogue and digital electronics, including microcontrollers.
-
Strong schematic capture experience, ideally using Altium.
-
A structured and methodical approach to electronics design and development.
-
Confidence working independently in a laboratory environment, including board bring-up, measurement and fault-finding.
-
Experience working alongside PCB layout engineers and providing the technical constraints required for successful layouts.
-
Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
-
Experience with FMEA, structured problem-solving and technical investigation.
-
Experience supporting approvals, validation and product qualification.
-
The ability to manage project priorities and deliver to agreed timescales.
-
Strong communication skills and the confidence to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
-
Eligibility to obtain and hold UK Security Clearance (SC), including meeting the relevant residency and nationality requirements.
-
A full UK driving licence, as occasional customer-site visits may be required.
Why This Role?
The biggest attraction here is the variety.
Rather than spending years working on one product or one narrow area of electronics, you''ll have the opportunity to work across different customers, technologies and industries. You''ll be trusted with technically demanding designs and given the autonomy to make the engineering decisions needed to get them right.
You''ll also have the flexibility to work primarily remotely, with access to a dedicated electronics laboratory for the occasions where you need to get hands-on with hardware.
There will be some travel to the Dunstable-area facility for build, bring-up, testing and integration, as well as occasional customer visits. For that reason, you''ll ideally live within around 90 minutes of Dunstable.
What''s On Offer:
Competitive salary.-25 days'' holiday plus bank holidays.-Hybrid/remote working.-Company pension.-Free parking.-Private healthcare following successful completion of probation.-Life insurance.-The opportunity to work on technically challenging electronics projects across multiple industries. Genuine technical ownership without being pushed towards a management-focused career path.-
If you''re a Senior Electronics Design Engineer who gets more satisfaction from solving the difficult hardware problem than simply managing the project around it, this is the kind of role that should keep you interested.
