The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to join a growing team delivering electrical infrastructure solutions across a range of National Highways projects. This role offers the chance to be at the forefront of the UK''s expanding electric vehicle charging network, supporting critical power connection and infrastructure upgrades across multiple locations nationwide.

Working alongside multidisciplinary engineering teams, Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), consultants, and key stakeholders, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in delivering electrical connection solutions that support the future of sustainable transport infrastructure.

This position would suit an ambitious engineer looking for a flexible working arrangement, including the possibility of part-time or ad hoc hours, while remaining involved in technically challenging and nationally significant projects.

Role Overview

The role will involve assessing EV charging requirements, coordinating DNO connection activities, reviewing electrical designs, and ensuring that projects are developed in line with relevant engineering standards, safety requirements, and client expectations.

The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of electrical distribution systems and be comfortable managing multiple sites, stakeholders, and connection activities simultaneously.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide electrical engineering expertise across multiple National Highways DNO connection projects.
• Review EV charging infrastructure requirements, including charger quantities, charger types, load profiles, and kVA demands.
• Translate EV charging and power requirements into practical electrical connection solutions.
• Develop and review electrical requirements for new and upgraded DNO connections.
• Support projects involving:
  • 11kV/0.4kV transformer installations
  • Ring Main Units (RMUs)
  • LV feeder pillars
  • Associated distribution infrastructure
• Produce and review key electrical engineering documentation including:
  • Load schedules
  • Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)
  • Equipment specifications
  • Technical datasheets
  • Cable schedules
  • Design calculations and supporting documentation
• Liaise with Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) to support connection applications and capacity upgrades.
• Review DNO offers and connection proposals, identifying technical constraints, risks, and opportunities.
• Assess and prioritise multiple project sites, determining the most effective connection strategies.
• Provide technical support and guidance to project teams and stakeholders throughout project delivery.
• Ensure compliance with industry standards, client requirements, and health and safety legislation.

Required Qualifications

• Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status is desirable.
• Candidates actively working towards professional registration will also be considered.
• Membership of a recognised engineering institution would be advantageous.

Technical Experience & Knowledge

The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in electrical infrastructure, power distribution, and utility connections, ideally within highways, transportation, utilities, energy, or infrastructure sectors.

Key experience includes:

• Electrical design and installation practices relating to DNO connections and utility infrastructure.
• Preparing, reviewing, or supporting DNO connection applications.
• Experience undertaking electrical connection studies and load assessments.
• Strong understanding of LV and HV distribution systems.
• Experience with:
  • 11kV/0.4kV transformer arrangements
  • Ring Main Units (RMUs)
  • LV feeder pillars
  • Network capacity upgrades
• Knowledge of EV charging infrastructure and associated electrical demand assessments.
• Experience translating power demand requirements into practical electrical network solutions.
• Understanding of electrical equipment specifications and connection requirements.
• Ability to assess multiple locations and prioritise competing connection activities effectively.
• Knowledge of UK electrical regulations, standards, and best practice.
• Experience working collaboratively with:
  • Distribution Network Operators (DNOs)
  • Clients
  • Contractors
  • Consultants
  • Regulatory stakeholders
• Awareness of risk management, project delivery challenges, and health, safety and environmental requirements.
