SEN Tutor – Make a Real Difference EFWS (Education and Family Wellbeing Service) is looking for an experienced SEN Tutor, Teacher, Mentor or Education Professional to support a young person in Colchester who has disengaged from mainstream education.

The young person may have Special Educational Needs (SEN), ASD, ADHD, SEMH, anxiety or other complex needs, and may be reluctant to engage with education or currently be out of school.

This is an opportunity to do more than deliver lessons. You''ll build a trusting relationship with a young person, understand their individual needs and help them rebuild their confidence, engagement and relationship with education.

The Role
As an SEN Tutor, you will provide personalised 1:1 tuition, primarily during weekday daytime hours.
Sessions may take place in the young person''s home, a local library or community venue, or online where permitted.
Depending on the learner and their programme, you may deliver:

  • GCSE tuition
  • Functional Skills
  • ASDAN
  • English and Maths
  • Mentoring and educational support
  • Support with re-engagement and preparation for a return to education
You''ll adapt your approach to the individual learner, building on their strengths and celebrating progress along the way. EFWS takes a strengths-based, trauma-informed and child-centred approach to supporting young people.
About You We''re looking for someone who is patient, empathetic and able to build positive relationships with young people who may be reluctant or anxious about education.
You should have:
  • Experience working with SEN and/or SEMH learners
  • Experience with needs such as ASD, ADHD, anxiety or trauma
  • Previous experience as a teacher, tutor, mentor, youth worker or education professional
  • The ability to engage and motivate reluctant or disengaged learners
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Patience, empathy and a non-judgemental approach
  • The ability to work independently on a 1:1 basis
  • A good understanding of safeguarding
  • Good organisational and IT skills
  • The right to work in the UK
  • Willingness to undergo an enhanced DBS check
QTS or equivalent is highly desirable, particularly for placements involving GCSE English, Maths and Science. Trainees working towards QTS are also welcome to apply.
Hours & Flexibility This is a flexible contract, making it well suited to teachers, tutors and education professionals looking for additional or flexible daytime work.
The placement is expected to involve:
  • Weekday daytime sessions
  • Up to hours per week
  • Morning and/or afternoon availability
You provide us with your availability and preferred travel radius, and we aim to match you with suitable placements.
What We Offer
  • £25–£30 per hour
  • PAYE or umbrella payment
  • Flexible casual contract
  • Full induction and training
  • Mandatory safeguarding and Prevent training
  • Equipment pack provided
  • Ongoing support from our SENCO and Designated Safeguarding Lead
  • Ready-made GCSE, Functional Skills and ASDAN curriculum
  • Online learning platforms
  • No need to plan everything from scratch
  • Meaningful 1:1 work where you can build a positive relationship with a young person
  • The opportunity to make a genuine difference to their educational journey
