SEND Teaching Assistant Year 2, Mon and Tue, Birmingham

At a primary school in Birmingham, a Year 2 student recently sat and listened to a whole story for the first time. The school celebrated it, because that''s what progress looks like for the child. They''re looking for a SEND Teaching Assistant in Year 2 who values small wins as much as they do.

The role is Monday and Tuesday, working with two students who are at around Reception level in phonics and maths. Their main need is social, emotional and mental health (SEMH). Their day is built around choice and short bursts of learning, and it works best with a known adult who follows it consistently.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver short, adult-led 1:1 phonics sessions, taught by you and not on a Chromebook
  • Supervise focused activities such as Lego, jigsaws and puzzles
  • Support free-choice time, including outdoors and role play
  • Use "first... then..." language so the boys know what''s coming next
  • Read with small groups of other Year 2 children as part of the wider team
  • Celebrate small wins and keep the Year 2 team, Deputy Head and SENCO informed

Requirements

  • Experience supporting children with SEMH needs
  • A firm but kind approach, with clear boundaries
  • Willingness to follow the school''s strategies consistently
  • Confidence delivering phonics 1:1
  • The ability to stay calm when behaviour is challenging
  • A belief that progress for these students looks different from the rest of the class

This is a trauma-informed school with some challenging behaviour. The students won''t work well for anyone on day one, so expect a few difficult days while trust builds. The school will keep supporting you throughout.

What''s on offer

  • Ongoing work on a Monday and Tuesday
  • An ongoing role while the funding for the two pupils is in place. The school would review the role if either child left
  • A Year 2 team, Deputy Head and SENCO closely involved with the boys
  • No formal interview. You''d trial the role on the first couple of Mondays and Tuesdays, then have an open conversation with the school about fit

Why Sprint?

If you''re looking to work as a teacher in a mainstream classroom, providing day-to-day supply cover, we''re probably not the agency for you. But if you''re passionate about supporting students with additional needs and want a long-term role as an SEN Teaching Assistant, where you can build consistency and see the impact of your work every day, that''s exactly what we do.
