A specialist SEMH school in Blackburn is recruiting an SEN Teaching Assistant to join its experienced team. The school supports young people who require a more personalised and supportive approach to education, helping them overcome barriers and develop a more positive relationship with learning.

The Role - SEN Teaching Assistant

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will support pupils with needs including SEMH, ADHD, Autism, attachment difficulties, trauma-related needs, and associated behavioural challenges.

You will work across 1:1 support, small-group interventions, and classroom activities, providing pupils with the consistency and encouragement they need to engage successfully with education.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Building positive and trusting relationships with pupils
• Supporting emotional regulation and positive behaviour
• Recognising triggers and early signs of dysregulation
• Using appropriate de-escalation and behaviour management strategies
• Helping pupils return to learning following challenging moments
• Reinforcing routines, expectations, and clear boundaries
• Encouraging confidence, resilience, social skills, and independence

The successful SEN Teaching Assistant will understand that behaviour is often a form of communication. Rather than simply reacting to incidents, you will work with pupils to understand what is driving their behaviour and help them develop more effective ways of managing difficult emotions.

Ideal Candidate - SEN Teaching Assistant

• Previous SEMH, SEN, or challenging behaviour experience highly desirable
• Experience in PRUs, alternative provision, residential care, youth work, support work, mentoring, or sports coaching welcomed
• Calm, resilient, patient, and emotionally intelligent
• Confident maintaining clear and consistent boundaries
