A specialist SEMH school in Burnley is seeking a resilient and committed SEN Teaching Assistant to join its established team. The school supports young people who require a more individualised approach to education, providing the structure, encouragement, and emotional support they need to make meaningful progress.

The Role - SEN Teaching Assistant

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work with pupils with needs including SEMH, ADHD, Autism, attachment difficulties, trauma-related needs, and associated behavioural challenges.

Your role will combine academic support with pastoral and behavioural intervention. Working alongside teachers and specialist staff, you will provide 1:1 support, small-group interventions, and classroom assistance.

Responsibilities will include:

• Developing strong and trusting relationships with pupils
• Supporting emotional regulation and positive behaviour
• Recognising individual triggers and signs of dysregulation
• Using effective de-escalation strategies
• Helping pupils reflect and successfully return to learning
• Maintaining clear, consistent expectations and boundaries
• Encouraging resilience, confidence, social skills, and independence

Many pupils within SEMH education have experienced significant barriers to learning. The successful SEN Teaching Assistant will be able to look beyond challenging behaviour, understand the underlying need, and provide pupils with a consistent adult they can trust.

Ideal Candidate - SEN Teaching Assistant

• Previous SEMH, SEN, or challenging behaviour experience highly desirable
• Experience in PRUs, alternative provision, residential care, youth work, support work, mentoring, or sports coaching welcomed
• Calm, confident, resilient, and emotionally intelligent
• Able to establish clear boundaries while maintaining positive relationships
