A specialist SEMH school in Preston is recruiting an SEN Teaching Assistant to join its experienced team. The school supports young people who require a more individualised and nurturing approach to education, helping them overcome barriers and rebuild positive relationships with learning.

The Role - SEN Teaching Assistant

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will support pupils with needs including SEMH, ADHD, Autism, attachment difficulties, trauma-related needs, and associated behavioural challenges.

Working alongside teachers and pastoral professionals, you will provide 1:1 support, small-group interventions, and classroom assistance, helping pupils remain engaged and make academic, social, and emotional progress.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Building positive and consistent relationships with pupils
• Supporting emotional regulation and behaviour
• Recognising individual triggers and early signs of dysregulation
• Using appropriate de-escalation strategies
• Helping pupils re-engage with learning following difficult moments
• Reinforcing clear expectations, routines, and boundaries
• Encouraging confidence, resilience, and greater independence

Successful SEMH support requires someone who can look beyond challenging behaviour and understand the individual young person behind it. You will need to combine patience and empathy with confidence, consistency, and clear boundaries.

Ideal Candidate - SEN Teaching Assistant

• Previous SEMH, SEN, or challenging behaviour experience highly desirable
• Experience in PRUs, alternative provision, residential care, youth work, support work, mentoring, or sports coaching welcomed
• Calm, resilient, patient, and emotionally intelligent
• Confident maintaining boundaries and managing challenging situations
• Psychology and related graduates encouraged to apply
• Genuine commitment to improving outcomes for young people with additional needs
