SEN Teaching Assistant

The role
We are seeking an experienced Teaching Assistant to take on a 1:1 support role in Year 1, working with a non-verbal pupil who presents with challenging behaviour.This is a full-time, long-term supply position starting in September 2026 and continuing for the full academic year.The role requires a confident, resilient and compassionate individual who has experience supporting children with complex needs and is able to build strong, trusting relationships.
Key responsibilities
- Provide dedicated 1:1 support for a pupil with additional needs
- Support communication using appropriate strategies (e.g. visual aids, PECS or similar approaches)
- Manage and respond to challenging behaviour in a calm, consistent and positive manner
- Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO and external professionals
- Help the pupil access learning in a way that meets their individual needs
- Implement behaviour strategies and individual support plans
- Foster a safe, structured and supportive learning environment
- Promote the child''s social and emotional development
Requirements
- Proven experience working with children with additional needs (essential)
- Experience supporting non-verbal pupils and/or children with challenging behaviour
- Strong understanding of behaviour management strategies
- Knowledge of SEND practices and communication support methods (desirable)
- Patient, resilient and nurturing approach
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and adapt to pupils'' needs
- Strong teamwork and communication skills
