Purpose of the Role

To support pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in accessing learning, developing independence, and achieving their individual educational goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with SEN.
  • Assist in implementing Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Support pupils with autism, ADHD, learning difficulties, speech and language needs, and social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs.
  • Adapt learning materials and activities to meet individual needs.
  • Encourage pupil engagement, participation, and independence.
  • Monitor and record pupil progress and report observations to teachers and SENCO.
  • Promote positive behaviour and emotional well-being.
  • Support pupils during classroom activities, transitions, breaktimes, and educational visits.
  • Assist with personal care and medical needs where required.
  • Help maintain a safe, inclusive, and nurturing learning environment.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, parents/carers, and external professionals.
  • Attend staff meetings, training, and pupil review meetings as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with safeguarding policies.
  • Support the school''s commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Experience working with children or young people.
  • Understanding of Special Educational Needs and inclusive education.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patient, empathetic, and supportive approach.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with pupils and staff.
  • Good literacy, numeracy, and IT skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting child welfare.
  • Enhanced DBS clearance or willingness to obtain one.

Desirable

  • Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification.
  • Previous experience in a SEN school or mainstream SEN setting.
  • Knowledge of EHCP processes and SEN interventions.
  • Training in Makaton, PECS, Team Teach, or equivalent SEN-related programmes.
  • First Aid and Safeguarding training.
