About the School

We are working with a caring and inclusive 3-form entry primary school in Brent that is committed to supporting the development, wellbeing and success of every pupil. The school places a strong emphasis on creating a positive environment where children and young people can thrive, while also recognising the importance of staff wellbeing and mental health.

The school is now looking for a passionate and experienced SEN Teaching Assistant to join its supportive team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to make a real difference to pupils with additional needs, while developing their own skills and career within education.

About the Role

The successful candidate will work closely with class teachers, the SENCO and wider support staff to provide targeted support to pupils with Special Educational Needs.

You will primarily work 1:1 and in small groups, helping pupils access learning, develop communication and social skills, build confidence and become more independent.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide dedicated 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEN
  • Support pupils to access the curriculum through differentiated and personalised activities
  • Use PECS and Makaton to support pupils'' communication and understanding
  • Implement Now and Next Boards, visual timetables and other communication strategies
  • Support pupils with communication, social, emotional and behavioural needs
  • Promote independence, confidence and positive relationships
  • Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO and wider school team
  • Support pupils in working towards their individual targets and EHCP outcomes
  • Monitor progress and provide feedback to teaching staff
  • Support pupils during lessons, breaktimes, lunchtimes and school activities where required

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • Previous experience supporting pupils with SEN is essential
  • Experience working with children with additional needs in a primary school setting
  • Experience using PECS is essential
  • Experience with Makaton is highly desirable
  • Experience using Now and Next Boards and other visual communication strategies
  • A caring, patient and nurturing approach
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to build strong, trusting relationships with pupils
  • A proactive, adaptable and child-centred approach
  • A genuine passion for supporting pupils with SEN
  • Relevant Teaching Assistant qualifications are desirable but not essential
  • Must have a DBS on the Update Service or be willing to apply
