A rewarding opportunity in specialist education

Do you have a passion for helping young people overcome barriers, build confidence and develop the skills they need for adult life?

We are looking for a Learning & Independence Mentor to join a specialist SEN school in Northampton, working within its Post-16 provision with students aged 16-18 who have complex additional needs.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys helping young people achieve personal milestones, develop everyday living skills and access learning in a supportive and structured environment.

Your duties will include:

  • Supporting students individually and in small groups throughout the school day.
  • Helping young people develop communication, social skills and practical independence.
  • Encouraging participation in learning activities and preparation-for-adulthood programmes.
  • Providing personal care, including toileting, personal hygiene and mealtime assistance.
  • Supporting students with physical disabilities and mobility requirements, following appropriate training.
  • Promoting positive interactions, emotional wellbeing and appropriate behaviour.
  • Assisting with practical activities and opportunities to develop everyday life skills.
  • Following individual support plans and maintaining a safe, respectful learning environment.

We are keen to hear from people who are compassionate, dependable and motivated to support young people with SEND.

You should be:

  • Patient and understanding of individual needs and abilities.
  • Comfortable providing personal care as part of your daily responsibilities.
  • Confident communicating with young people and building trusting relationships.
  • Able to remain calm and supportive in challenging situations.
  • A proactive team player with a flexible approach.

Experience in special educational needs, education, care or support work would be an advantage.

The position will begin on a temporary basis, with the opportunity to move into a permanent role for a suitable candidate.
