SEMH Teaching Assistant - Croydon
We are seeking a dedicated and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a supportive secondary SEMH school in Croydon from September. This is an excellent opportunity for a passionate individual who is committed to supporting young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs to achieve their full potential.
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with students who require additional support with their learning, behaviour, emotional regulation and social development. You will play a key role in helping create a positive, safe and nurturing learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small-group support to students with SEMH needs.
- Build positive and professional relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and mentor.
- Support students in managing behaviours and emotions using positive behaviour strategies.
- Assist teachers in delivering engaging lessons and differentiated learning activities.
- Encourage student engagement, attendance and participation in school life.
- Support the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and behaviour support plans.
- Work collaboratively with teaching staff, pastoral teams and external professionals.
- Promote safeguarding, wellbeing and inclusion at all times.
Requirements
- Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs is preferred.
- A calm, patient and resilient approach.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to manage challenging behaviours positively and effectively.
- A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people.
- Previous experience in education, youth work, care, mentoring or support work would be advantageous.
