School Catering Assistant

Job Purpose
To support the preparation, cooking, and serving of nutritious meals to pupils and staff, ensuring a high standard of hygiene, safety, and customer service within the school kitchen and dining areas.
Key Responsibilities

Assist with the preparation and cooking of food under the direction of the Catering Manager or Cook.

Serve meals and refreshments to pupils and staff efficiently and courteously.

Maintain high standards of food hygiene and safety in accordance with statutory regulations and school policies.

Clean kitchen equipment, utensils, work surfaces, and dining areas before, during, and after service.

Set up and clear down dining areas, including tables, chairs, and cutlery.
-
Help manage stock levels by unpacking deliveries, rotating stock, and reporting shortages or damaged items.

Follow portion control guidelines to reduce food waste.

Adhere to allergen management procedures and special dietary requirements.

Assist with recording food temperatures and other required checks.

Support special school events requiring catering, such as parent evenings or school functions.
Person Specification
Essential:
-
Ability to work as part of a team.
-
Good communication and customer service skills.
-
Awareness of food hygiene and safety practices (training can be provided).

Flexibility to adapt to changing needs during service.
Desirable:
-
Previous experience in catering, hospitality, or working in a school environment.

Basic Food Hygiene Certificate or equivalent.
