Sales Operator – Road Freight
Location: Tamworth
Contract Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Salary: £28,000 -£30,000 Depending on experience
Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm
About the Role
We are seeking a highly organised and customer-focused Sales Operator to join a busy road freight team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys building strong client relationships while managing transport operations from booking through to final invoicing.
You will be a motivated individual who takes pride in delivering exceptional customer service and ensuring shipments are managed successfully from start to finish. You will enjoy working in a fast-moving environment, taking ownership of your workload, and contributing to the success of both your customers and your team. You will take ownership of a portfolio of customers, acting as their primary point of contact and ensuring that every shipment is delivered efficiently, accurately, and profitably. The successful candidate will be proactive, commercially aware, and capable of managing multiple tasks in a fast-paced logistics environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage a dedicated portfolio of customers, delivering a high level of service and building long-term relationships.
- Act as the main point of contact for customers throughout the shipment process.
- Provide regular updates and communicate any operational requirements or changes.
- Coordinate with transport providers to ensure collections and deliveries are completed on time.
- Identify and resolve potential issues before they impact service delivery.
- Monitor supplier costs and ensure profitability is maintained throughout the shipment lifecycle
- Accurately process customer orders within the transport management system.
- Arrange and distribute customs and shipping documentation as required.
- Ensure shipment details are correctly communicated to suppliers and service providers
- Maintain accurate records and provide documentation to customers and stakeholders when requested.
- Complete shipment costing, charging, and invoicing within required deadlines.
- Highlight any changes in customer activity or trading patterns that may affect profitability.
- Work closely with colleagues to maintain excellent service standards.
- Support team members during busy periods to ensure workloads are managed effectively.
- Build positive working relationships with internal departments and external partners
- Ensure all transport instructions comply with relevant transport, customs, and environmental regulations.
- Report operational concerns, compliance issues, or risks that could affect customers or business performance.
- Contribute to a safe working environment by identifying and reporting hazards.

Essential Skills & Experience
- Strong customer service and relationship management skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple shipments and priorities simultaneously.
- High attention to detail with strong administrative and data-entry skills.
- Commercial awareness and an understanding of cost control.
- A proactive, solutions-focused approach to problem solving
- Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a team environment.
Desirable
- Experience using Transport Management Systems (TMS).
- Knowledge of customs procedures and road freight operations.
- Understanding of transport, customs, and environmental compliance requirements.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
