THE BUSINESS

Westray Recruitment Group is looking to recruit Health, Safety & Environment (SHE) Advisor for our client-based client in Poole.

Our client is a family-run business with around 200 employees, a strong operational culture, and a real commitment to doing the right thing. We are now looking to bring an experienced, hands-on SHE professional into the team on a permanent basis to own this function from the ground up.  The organisation is going through an exciting growth phase and would like to add to the team.

This is a newly created, SHE Advisor position. You will be the competent person for health, safety and environmental compliance across all the site, working closely with the Operations Director, HR, and external advisors to build a proactive and well-documented safety culture.

The role has real breadth and genuine influence. You will own the H&S management system, lead on risk assessments and incident investigation, drive compliance with environmental obligations, and be the first point of contact for all SHE-related matters across the business. You will also work closely with HR on employee welfare, occupational health referrals, and return-to-work risk assessments where these intersect with safety.

This is not a clipboard-and-clipboard role. The business is an operationally complex site with forklift operations, manual handling, waste management, vehicle salvage, and transport logistics all running simultaneously. You will need to be visible, credible, and practical.

THE ROLE

Occupational Health and Employee Welfare
  • Work alongside HR on occupational health referrals, return-to-work risk assessments, and reasonable adjustments where safety considerations apply.
  • Produce and maintain role-specific and individual risk assessments, including those related to workplace injuries, health conditions with safety implications, and vulnerable worker scenarios.
  • Support HR in welfare cases where the physical safety of the employee or colleagues is a factor. Maintain clear and separate documentation chains for H&S and HR strands within the same case.
  • Promote and support employee wellbeing initiatives across both sites, including liaison with external H&S advisors and occupational health providers.
  Health & Safety Management
  • Own and maintain the CTL company Management System, ensuring it meets the requirements of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999, and all relevant sector legislation.
  • Lead the production, review, and implementation of risk assessments across all operational areas, including FLT operations, manual handling, vehicle salvage, waste handling, and transport activities.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor Safe Systems of Work (SSoW) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for high-risk activities.
  • Chair the H&S Committee and produce accurate, action-tracked minutes. Drive closure of outstanding actions and escalate unresolved items to the Operations Director.
  • Manage all accident, incident, and near-miss reporting including RIDDOR notifications to the HSE. Conduct thorough investigations and produce written reports with corrective actions and root cause analysis.
  • Ensure all H&S induction and refresher training is delivered, recorded, and up to date across both sites. Work with HR to maintain training matrices and signed completion records.
  • Coordinate and carry out regular site inspections and audits, producing written reports and tracking corrective action to completion.
  • Maintain the Fire Safety management system including fire risk assessments, evacuation procedures, drill records, and liaison with responsible persons at each site.
  • Manage PPE procurement, records, and compliance. Liaise with the MY-SMI uniform and PPE ordering portal and operational managers to ensure appropriate provision.

FLT and Transport Safety
  • Take specific ownership of FLT safety compliance, including operator licence verification, refresher training scheduling, incident investigation, and site traffic management.
  • Work with the Transport Manager and Operations team to review and update the FLT risk assessment, site traffic plan, and pedestrian/vehicle segregation measures.
  • Support the Transport function with driver H&S compliance including Driver Handbook review, licence checks via the Driver Hire Portal, and tachograph-related H&S obligations.
  • Respond to and investigate all FLT incidents and near-misses, producing formal investigation reports within agreed timeframes.

Environmental Compliance
  • Act as the competent person for environmental compliance in line with the business Environmental Policy and relevant Environment Agency requirements.
  • Manage waste streams, spillage control procedures, and emissions monitoring. Ensure appropriate records are maintained and reported.
  • Support the organisations ISO 27001 compliance lead where SHE activities intersect with the ISO framework. Maintain awareness of ISO documentation requirements and audit readiness.
  • Monitor and report on environmental performance, flagging risks and identifying improvement opportunities to the Operations Director.

Stakeholder Management and Reporting
  • Build effective working relationships with operational managers, the Transport team, HR, Finance, and the Trent family leadership to embed a genuine safety-first culture.
  • Produce clear, concise SHE management reports for the Operations Director and senior leadership on a monthly and ad hoc basis, covering KPIs, incident trends, compliance status, and emerging risks.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for HSE inspections, Environment Agency visits, and external audit activity.
  • Manage the relationship with the external H&S advisor to ensure continuity of advice and site coverage.
  • Represent the business at relevant external forums, industry groups, or regulatory meetings as required.

  THE PERSON

Qualifications
  • NEBOSH National General Certificate (NGC) as a minimum. NEBOSH National Diploma or NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management is strongly preferred.
  • Alternatively, IOSH Managing Safely (or equivalent) supported by substantial practical H&S experience in a relevant operational environment.
  • GradIOSH as a minimum professional membership level. CertIOSH or CMIOSH preferred.

Experience
  • Demonstrable experience in a dedicated H&S or SHE role within a manufacturing, automotive, logistics, recycling, or similarly complex operational environment.
  • Proven experience writing, implementing, and reviewing risk assessments in a multi-hazard operational setting.
  • Hands-on experience with FLT safety, including accident investigation, operator competency assessment, and traffic management.
  • Track record of leading incident investigations to root cause, including experience with RIDDOR reportable incidents.
  • Experience chairing or contributing to H&S Committees and presenting findings to management.
  • Practical knowledge of environmental compliance obligations in a manufacturing or waste management context.
  • Experience working within or alongside an ISO-certified management system (ISO 45001, ISO 14001, or ISO 27001) is advantageous.

Skills and Attributes
  • Confident communicator who can influence at all levels, from the shop floor to the boardroom, without losing credibility with either.
  • Highly organised with a structured approach to documentation, record-keeping, and audit trails.
  • Practical and visible: this role requires someone who spends time on site, not just at a desk.
  • Able to manage competing priorities and multiple open actions without dropping the ball.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, operationally driven environment where decisions need to be made quickly and documented thoroughly.
  • Diplomatically firm: able to hold the line on compliance requirements with managers who move quickly and may push back.

Desirable
  • NEBOSH Environmental Certificate or equivalent environmental qualification.
  • Experience in an ELV (End of Life Vehicle) or automotive salvage environment.
  • Familiarity with DVSA and transport compliance obligations relevant to a fleet operation.
  • Experience with COSHH assessments and management of hazardous substances in an operational setting.
  • First Aid at Work qualification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Experience implementing or improving a H&S induction programme.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems.
