Help Shape the Future of Rail Safety on a Major HS2 Programme
We are seeking an experienced Safety Engineer with a rail industry background to join an exciting and fast-moving programme supporting the delivery of rail related projects.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a safety professional who thrives in complex railway environments and enjoys working collaboratively with clients, assessors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure robust, compliant safety solutions.
Due to project demands, we are looking for someone who can start at short notice and quickly add value within a developing programme environment.
The Role
As a Safety Engineer, you will play a key role in delivering safety engineering activities across major rail projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards and supporting the development of safe and effective railway systems.
You will be responsible for analysing hazards, managing safety records, producing high-quality safety documentation, and working closely with stakeholders to define and deliver client requirements.
A key aspect of the role will involve adapting existing products and safety approaches for application within new operational environments and project contexts.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct hazard identification and hazard analysis activities.
- Produce clear, structured hazard analysis reports and safety documentation.
- Develop and maintain Safety Cases in compliance with railway industry requirements.
- Manage and maintain Hazard Records in line with Common Safety Method (CSM) requirements.
- Support safety assurance activities throughout the project lifecycle.
- Engage with multiple stakeholders to capture, understand, and refine client requirements.
- Work closely with Independent Safety Assessors (ISA) and support assessment activities.
- Contribute to safety activities relating to ETCS and wider railway systems.
- Collaborate with ergonomics, operational, and engineering teams to identify and mitigate safety risks.
- Support project teams in applying established products and solutions within new operational environments.
About You
We are particularly interested in candidates with proven railway systems safety experience. While certifications are beneficial, hands-on rail safety expertise is the priority.
Essential Experience
- Demonstrable experience as a Safety Engineer within the rail industry.
- Strong knowledge of CSM (Common Safety Methods) and EN50126.
- Experience producing Safety Cases and safety assurance documentation.
- Proven background in hazard identification, hazard analysis, and risk management.
- Experience managing and maintaining structured Hazard Records.
- Ability to translate technical analysis into clear, concise reports.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Comfortable operating in evolving project environments where requirements may still be developing.
Desirable
- Experience supporting rail pogrammes or major rail infrastructure projects.
- Knowledge of ETCS and signalling-related safety activities.
- Experience working alongside Independent Safety Assessors (ISA).
- Understanding of human factors and ergonomics within railway safety environments.
Location & Working Pattern
- Primarily remote with flexibility.
- Attendance in Chippenham approximately one day per week.
- Additional access to offices in London and Birmingham as required.
- Occasional travel may be required based on project needs.
