OverviewLondon Vet Specialists are seeking a Registered Veterinary Nurse with an interest or experience in surgical nursing to join the team as a Surgery-Focused RVN in our new multidisciplinary referral centre in Hammersmith in Autumn 2025.

Company ProfileLondon Vet Specialists originated as a boutique small animal referral centre in Belsize Park, North London and relocated to a new state-of-the-art site in Hammersmith, West London. The hospital offers specialist-led services including orthopaedic and soft-tissue surgery, internal medicine, ophthalmology, anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, oncology, neurology and emergency and critical care. Role OverviewThe Surgery-Focused RVN will work with the Head of Nursing Services (HoNS), Lead Nurses, Clinical Director and Clinicians to ensure the efficient delivery of outstanding patient care within soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery services. The role may involve ophthalmic surgery, neurosurgery and interventional cardiology procedures. Responsibilities include high standards of patient and client care, surgical preparation, circulating theatre assistance, scrub nursing, monitoring of sedation and anaesthesia, ward care, handling and maintenance of surgical equipment (including laparoscopy, arthroscopy and fluoroscopy), assisting with diagnostic procedures, nurse consultation, accurate record keeping and effective communication and teamwork. You will work with the nursing team to maintain a happy and efficient working environment.

The role is a blend of theatre support (circulating and scrub nurse), anaesthesia monitoring, diagnostics assistance, wards nursing, consultation and client care, prioritised within the surgery discipline. A preference for theatre can be accommodated. The role may require some support in other areas within the LVS capability of an RVN.

Our surgery team is led by Head of Soft Tissue Surgery Dr Janet McClaran and Head of Orthopaedic Surgery Dr Kiki Tarvin. Previous referral experience is not essential as training and support are provided.

Key Responsibilities

Provision of high-quality patient care within soft tissue, orthopaedic, ophthalmic and neuro surgery services.

Demonstrate an excellent work ethic and hygiene standards; undertake infection control actions as appropriate.

Prioritise surgery inpatient care and implement nursing care plans.

Ensure patient comfort and safety during investigations, surgery and hospitalisation.

Maintain and care for surgical instruments, kits and sterile supplies.

Accurate record keeping, especially anaesthetic and hospitalisation records in SmartFlow.

Assist with stock management and liaise with pharmacy and purchasing teams.

Plan daily case load with Lead Nurses and HoNS; raise issues as needed.

Participate in team briefings and meetings to ensure effective communication.

Contribute to team reflections of incidents and near misses, including Halo reporting.

Support ISFM cat-friendly standards and Dogs Trust/BVBA dog-friendly standards across the hospital.

Seek opportunities to maintain and expand nursing competence; participate in role swaps where appropriate.

Participate in hospital committees (Sustainability, Culture and Wellbeing, Dog/Cat-Friendly) to influence culture and standards.
