Registered Manager - Children’s Residential Home

Thornton Heath
Up to £70,000 + bonus
New 3-bed therapeutic EBD children’s home

We are recruiting an experienced Registered Manager - Children’s Residential Home to lead a new 3-bed therapeutic home in Thornton Heath.

This is not simply a new home with the word “therapeutic” attached to it.

The provider has developed a structured therapeutic framework designed to shape how the home operates from day one, how staff understand behaviour, how they respond to young people and how learning is carried into care planning, supervision and everyday practice.

At the heart of the model is one simple principle:

Every behaviour has a story.

The Registered Manager - Children’s Residential Home will lead a team that is encouraged to look beyond the behaviour itself and understand what may be happening underneath it, including trauma, attachment, emotional regulation, fear, unmet need and communication.

A genuine therapeutic model

Before placements begin, staff will complete foundation training in:

  • Trauma, attachment and behaviour as communication
  • Building therapeutic relationships
  • Connection, consistency and boundaries
  • Co-regulation and de-escalation
  • Creating an emotionally and physically safe home
  • Reflective practice and staff wellbeing

The training is practical and reflective, using realistic residential scenarios, discussion, role play and case formulation.

Once a young person is placed, the therapeutic approach becomes more individualised.

The Registered Manager - Children’s Residential Home will work alongside the team to ensure training is linked directly to the young person’s presentation, strengths, risks, communication needs and lived experience.

Learning will then be embedded into:

- Therapeutic care plans

- Risk and safety planning

- Staff responses

- Key work

- Reflective supervision

- Incident learning

- Team development

The aim is to create a home where the therapeutic model can actually be seen in practice, not simply referenced in policies or training records.

The role

As Registered Manager - Children’s Residential Home, you will take responsibility for the leadership, culture and day-to-day management of the service.

You will:

  • Lead the home through registration and into operation
  • Recruit, develop and retain a strong staff team
  • Create a safe, stable and child-centred culture
  • Maintain high standards of safeguarding
  • Ensure compliance with the Children’s Homes Regulations 2015 and Quality Standards
  • Embed therapeutic and relationship-based practice throughout the home
  • Ensure care plans and risk assessments remain meaningful and current
  • Use supervision and reflective practice to develop staff
  • Review incidents and use learning to improve practice
  • Work closely with the Responsible Individual and wider professional network
  • Ensure the voice of each young person remains central to the home

What we are looking for

We are looking for a Registered Manager - Children’s Residential Home with strong experience in residential childcare and the confidence to build and lead a new service.

You will ideally have:

  • Strong experience within a residential children’s home
  • Previous leadership or management experience
  • A good understanding of safeguarding and regulatory requirements
  • Knowledge of the Children’s Homes Regulations and Quality Standards
  • Level 5 Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare, or be working towards it
  • Experience supervising and developing staff
  • A reflective, child-centred approach to leadership
  • An understanding of trauma-informed and relationship-based care
  • The confidence to challenge poor practice and maintain high standards

You will also have the support of an experienced and supportive Responsible Individual, giving the Registered Manager - Children’s Residential Home the backing to establish the service properly and build the right culture from the beginning.

This is an opportunity to lead a new home where therapeutic care is intended to influence everything from staff training and supervision to daily interactions with young people.
